Emily Heikes, a 6-foot-0 class of 2001 center for Stagg HS in Illinois,
verbally committed to Purdue on September 20, 2000. Although she will
play more of a combo forward role at Purdue, she is an intimidating high
school center. Heikes averaged 14.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per game as
a junior, leading the Chargers to a 20-8 record and a No.6 ranking in
Illinois Class AA. She shot just over 50-percent from the floor and averaged
two steals per game. Stagg was knocked from the Class AA sectional by Maria,
39-37. Heikes was held to seven points and nine rebounds, sitting almost
the entire second quarter with foul trouble. Heikes is described as a
board-sweeper who plays excellent post defense against most high school
competition. She also has the capability of developing into a wing player,
as she does have a perimeter shot. Still an unknown nationally, Heikes'
game began to develop during her junior year. She is also a good student,
planning to study engineeering at Purdue. Heikes was named all-state
honorable mention by the Chicago Tribune, and all-conference (SICA West)
as a junior. Heikes chose the Boilers over DePaul because of the Purdue
engineering programs.
Stagg HS head coach Missy Mason..."She has multiple strengths. She's a
great rebounder, runs the floor well, plays the post, but can come out and
hit the three."
