10-14-99...Purdue will get the assistance of another outstanding
walk-on guard in the 2000-2001 season. Willie Deane, a 6-foot-2
180-pound transfer from Boston College will be eligible to play for
the Boilers after sitting this year due to NCAA transfer rules. Deane
will have three years of eligibility remaining at Purdue.
Deane averaged 5.4 point, 1.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists for Boston College
as a freshman, playing in 26 of 27 games. Deane shot 37.4 percent (48-131)
from the floor, 30.0 percent (12-40) from the perimeter and 64.4 percent
(29-45) from the line.
As a high school senior, Deane averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and
5.0 assists, leading his team to a 28-1 record and Big 10, Section II
Class A, Region 2 and New York Public School Association championships.
Deane was also a USA Today All-American Honorable Mention, the Albany
Times-Union Player of the Year, and Class A state tournament MVP. Deane
missed only one game his entire high school career.
Before signing with Boston College in April of 1998, Deane was recruited
by several high profile Division I colleges, including Michigan and
Marquette.
