Shinika Parks is a 5'9 combo guard, skilled enough to also play on
the wing if needed. Parks was the floor leader for the 1999 JUCO National
Champion Trinity Valley, who went a perfect 36-0. Parks' skills include
verastility, good ballhandling skills and surprisingly good post-up skills
when taking the ball to the basket. Originally from California, Parks spent
her first year of junior college at Westark JC in Arkansas, later
transferring to Trinity.
Parks is down to a strong three considerations...Florida, Purdue and
UNLV. She plans on making her announcement following her visit to Purdue on
April 24th.
As a sophomore junior college player, Parks averaged 12 poiints, 8.5
boards and 4.0 assists for 36-0 Trinity Valley.
Shinika signed with Purdue on April 26, 1999.
5-3-99...Recently signed Shinika Parks is on track to join the Boilers
next season, but according to sources will need to complete six more hours
at Trinity this summer to qualify.
4-30-99...For some good articles on the Boiler's newest signee, take
at look at these articles from the official Purdue Athletics site and the
Indianapolis Star. Purdue received Parks' signed LOI on Wednesday.
4-26-99...Parks became the first junior college transfer to sign
with the women today, following up a Sunday verbal with a signed letter.
During her visit she got to play a little pickup with some of the current
players, and said she is looking forward to playing with with Katie Douglas
and Kelly Komara. For some quotes, check out this Journal and Courier
article.
4-19-99...Shinika is down to three schools...Florida, UNLV and
Purdue...and has visited them in this order, expecting to visit Purdue
this coming weekend. Florida may not be such a good fit now that JUCO
All-American honorable mention guard Shona Rucker has committed. Florida
plans to use the 5'7 guard at both guard positions. Rucker visited the same
weekend as Parks, and Rucker admitted telling the Florida staff during that
visit she was going to sign. Meanwhile, new Purdue head coach Kristy Curry
officially started her new job today. NCAA rules prohibit coaches from
recruiting until the first day of their new position.
4-16-99...Parks is expected to visit Purdue the weekend of the
23rd and 24th. The Journal and Courier had an update today for us on
Parks' recruitment.
4-15-99...The women have scheduled an official visit with juco
guard Shinika Parks. Parks is currently on an official visit to UNLV, and
just returned from the University of Florida. The California native is
also considering Louisiana Tech. Parks told the University of Florida
campus paper "I really liked (the Florida staff). We clicked very well.
We sat down and had a good heart to heart before I left. I think I would
fit in well." Florida is also recruiting another guard, National JUCO
Player-of-the-Year runner-up Karlita Washington, which might affect
Florida's chances of signing Parks. Florida is also looking at Kilgore
JC's Shona Rucker.
4-9-99...New women's coach Kristy Curry has her eye on another
junior college guard to help replace the loss of two senior all-american
guards. Tyler CC point guard Tawanda Barnes has already visited the
Purdue campus, and the staff looks to host Trinity Valley Texas JC combo
guard Shinika Parks soon. Parks averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and
six assists for the JUCO national champs this year. Sparks will visit
Florida this weekend.
