Sean Kline is a 6'7 versatile forward from Huntington North HS
(Class 4A). Kline simply makes things happen when he is on the floor
with a variety of different skills. Huntington North coach Eric
Foister won't deny Kline is a scorer, but he isn't the focus of the
team. Kline can be the inside portion of an inside-outside game, but
can also be the outside half too. A smart player (and good student),
Sean makes things happen when he touches the ball, whether it be
scoring or drawing the defense. You hear about player that "let the
game come to them", and Kline is a good example. Most opponents
assume he is a post-up player, but the 6'7 forward is also a perimeter
threat. His size allows him to play either the 3, 4 or 5 positions
in high school, but will likely be a small forward in college. He
already has a good start on his perimeter game.
Sean's sophomore year brought more attention as he began to make
more preseason all-state lists. Huntington North would go to their first
semistate game since 1969 and finish the season 20-6. Sean's playing time
doubled and so did his numbers. For the season, Sean averaged 22.5 points
and 10.8 boards, shooting 50-percent from the floor and .768 from the
line and was named to the News-Sentinel All-Area first team.
As a freshman Kline spent a lot of time in the lineup, ending the
year as Huntington North's leading scorer (13.2 ppg). Huntington North
finished the 97-98 season with a 12-10 record.
Sean had a career high of 36 points against Fort Wayne South
on 11/28/98, three points short of the school single-game record.
01-24-00...Huntington North improved to 7-5 with a 59-45 win over
Columbia City. Kline had 27 points and 15 boards, improving his season average
to 21.3 points per game. "Kline is awfully talented and he plays hard," said
columbia City head coach Chris Benedict. "He gets a lot of points, and that's
what people notice, but he goes to the boards, he tips passes. He does so
much." [Herald Press]
01-08-00...Missed freethrows down the stretch and three blown possessions
late ended Huntington North's four game winning streak. Huntington North had the
game within one point with four minutes remaining, but couldn't execute giving
Homestead the 62-50 victory. [Herald Press]
12-30-99...Kline surpassed the 1,000 career scoring mark with a season
high 32 points to lead Huntington North to the First Federal Classic title.
Kline now stands at 1,026 points and in fifth place on the Vikings' all-time
scoring list. He will move into fourth place with the next field goal he hits.
Huntington North defeated Cincy Oak Hill for the title, 61-50.
12-30-99...Huntington North advances to the finals of the First
Federal Classic with a 58-46 win over South Bend Washington. Sean Kline led
Huntington with 26 points and 14 boards and needs just 6 more points to surpass
the 1,000 point scoring mark for his career.
12-20-99...Kline scored 31 points, 27 in the second half, as the Vikings
overcame a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to post a 64-57 overtime victory
over Jay County in their Olympic Athletic Conference opener. As this Huntington
Herald-Press article states, Jay County's gamble to let him take 15-footers
backfired into the overtime loss for Jay County.
12-4-99...It took constant pressure and an occassional triple-team
for Merrillville to hold Sean Kline to 15 points Friday night in the opening
night of the Region Roundball Rumble. With Purdue in the stands scouting,
Kline went 7-16 from the floor while the rest of the Huntington North squad
went for 5-32 from the floor. Although Merrillville's junior point guard
Lonnie Randolph ended up with the MVP award, Randolph wanted it known
that Sean Kline wasn't overrated.
12-3-99...A look at both the basketball and personal life of Sean
Kline from the TimesOnline.
11-27-99...Huntington North drops one to Fort Wayne South in
the finals of the Thanksgiving Classic, 75-63. Huntington North
advance to the finals with a win over Fort Wayne Elmhurst the day before
Thanksgiving, 72-45. Sean saw limited time in the game due to being sick with
mononucleosis.
11-24-99...The Fort Wayne News Sentinel has Sean listed on their preseason
"Fantastic Five" team, along with Concordia's Andre Patterson Jr., Bellmont
sophomore Seth Colclasure, Boiler football target Jovan Witherspoon, and Snider's
Demetrick Gamble. Read the article quickly before it goes away. Summing up the
article, Kline has spent time this summer working on his rebounding, plus has
added 15 pounds of muscle. According to Kline, he has received scholarship offers
from Notre Dame, Michigan State, Purdue, Marquette and Indiana, and has seen
interest from Iowa and Ohio State.
11-23-99...A season preview of the 99-00 Huntington North Vikings.
11-22-99...Found this writeup on Kline over on the Insider's Report
site.
11-05-99...Mike Pegram has some video of Sean up on the SportsMidwest
site you can download by clicking this link to Kline.avi. The file
may take a while to download depending on your connection.
11-04-99...Kline continues his tour of unofficially visiting state
schools. This past Monday, Sean was in Bloomington visiting the Hoosiers.
According to this article from the Bloomington Hoosier Times, Indiana,
Notre Dame, Purdue, Michigan State and Iowa are all being considered.
This goes along with the rumors he wishes to stay close to home.
10-28-99...The Irish are still hoping to get Kline, as this
South Bend Tribune article states.
10-23-99...Sean Kline, along with his parents, visited Mackey
Arena today unofficially. He and his parents sat and watched most of the
practice today, seeing Keady work with the players on running the "pick
and roll" and avoiding fouls. The last half of the practice was a
controlled scrimmage with three refs in attendance. This was a planned
unofficial visit, as the coaching staff was notified ahead of time
Sean would be stopping by.
10-22-99...In an attempt to get a leg up on the competition,
Notre Dame head coach Matt Doherty packed up his team and drove more
than an hour south to practice in Kline's home gym. Doherty cited a
need to get the players off campus, but it was no coincidence the team
ended up in Huntington. Especially not when there are dozens of high
schools on the way to Huntington. Not really sure if the NCAA would
like the picture of a Notre Dame player shaking hands with Kline, but
here's the story from the South Bend Tribune.
9-2-99...Kline, with AAU teammates Chris Thomas and Jared Jeffries in
tow, made unofficial visits to Notre Dame this past weekend. While most
package deals never seem to materialize, don't underestimate the ability
of either Thomas or Kline to talk the other in attending the same school.
Kline's participation with the Bloomington Red squad last season was due
in large part to Thomas also being on the team. However, Notre Dame will
only have one available scholarship to offer the Class of 2001. It is
possible a scholarship could be held over, but Oklahoma transfer Ryan
Humphrey is inked in to get the last scholarship for the Class of 2000.
6-10-99...Hoop Scoop talked to Sean two weekends ago about his list
of schools. Michigan State, Ohio State, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan,
NC State, Marquette, and Kentucky were all mentioned.
6-6-99...One of the things we heard this summer from Chris Thomas'
father was the package deal that brought both Thomas and Kline onto the
Bloomington Red team. The two wanted to play with each other. A recent
article in the Huntington Herald Press talks a little about Kline's AAU
play with plenty of comments from his parents. Also out on the net are
some mpg videos [ skline1.mpg / skline2.mpg ] featuring some of Kline's play
in Lexington last weekend.
4-29-99...Kline will be playing this weekend for Bloomington Red
AAU at the Spiece tournament at Purdue. He will be playing on the same team
with several other Purdue prospects including Austin Parkinson, John Hamilton,
Chris Thomas and others. Following is a list of Bloomington Red's games during
pool play.
FRI 8:30pm vs. Columbus Basketball Club (Co-Rec #14)
SAT 9:30am vs. Team Kansas Strykers (Co-Rec #13)
SAT 2:00pm vs. The Challenge (Co-Rec #14)
4-24-99...Sean Kline has been named to the Fort Wayne News Sentinel
All-Area team. Kline is one of only two sophomores to make the team, the
other being Concordia's 6'6 Andre Patterson who is also being looked at
by Purdue. The article had this to say about Kline..."Kline, a preseason
PrepSports Fantastic Five player, surprised everybody but the staff at
the News-Sentinel this season with his improved play. He averaged 22.5
points per game and was a force inside and outside for the Vikings, who
won the Huntington North Sectional title."
Sean will be touring this summer with the Bloomington Red
senior-to-be AAU team. He will be playing up on the seniors team, as he
is only a junior-to-be.
3-20-99...Merrillville never trailed in its 77-55 victory over
Huntington North in the first round of the Lafayette 4A Semistate.
Kline was held seven points and six rebounds below his season average,
ending with 16 points and 5 boards. Merrillville won the game by exploiting
their quickness, shooting 53 percent from the field and getting 17 points
from their bench. 6'6 Jake Argenta and 6'5 John Davis (brother of Jamaal
Davis) played particularly well inside, with Davis breaking out for 10
points in the first half. Merrillville led by as many as 26 points.
Huntington North ends their season with a record of 20-6 and its first
Regional Championship since 1969.
3-12-99...Huntington North rolls on in the state tournament,
defeating Lafayette Harrison 69-63 in overtime. Huntington North
next travels to Lafayette Jeff high school, site of the Class 4A
North Semistate, where they will face Merrillville (21-3). Merrillville
is coming off a 10 point win over Gary West and is ranked as the state's
5th best 4A team. Sean Kline became Huntington North's all-time single
season points leader against Harrison, eclipsing the old record by
19 points. Sean will have at least one more game to further define the
new mark.
3-6-99...Huntington North rallied to cut an eleven point fourth
quarter deficit into a 60-54 Sectional final victory over Fort Wayne
Wayne. Kline had a game high 24 points, 9 in the first quarter and
10 in the final quarter, and 20 rebounds. He was subsequently named
the game MVP by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. Huntington North
travels next to Marion to face Lafayette Harrison on Friday. In the
other game that same evening at Marion will be the Class 2A Regional
featuring Northwestern and Maconaquah.
3-5-99...Huntington North is still alive, finally managing to
get past the Marion Giants in postseason tournament competition.
Sean Kline scored a game high 22 points, but could have done more damage
if he wasn't benched with 2 fouls for 9 minutes in the first half.
Huntington North (18-5) will face Fort Wayne Wayne in the Sectional
final. For a game recap, go to this Huntington Herald Press article.
3-2-99...A Huntington North fan emailed Sean's "Play of the Year"
which occurred during the Fort Wayne South sectional game..."I checked
your site and noticed you don't have anything on the SouthSide game. I
know its late now, but you might want to mention the "Play of the Year."
In the 3rd period HN's Brian Glasgow gathered up a loose ball and gave
it to Rick Hall, who took two dribbles and made a sweet behind-the-back
pass between two South Side defenders. Joel Cotton grabbed and flipped
it towards the rim in a flash, awaiting Sean Kline who sent it home
two-handed. He was also fouled and made a three-point play. It was
definitely the turning point." (scouting report by anonymous)
2-28-99...Sean was named the Prep Athlete of the Week by
the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel after 29 and 24 point games against
Warsaw and Alexandria respectively. For a game summary of the Alexandria
game, check out this article from the Herald Press.
2-21-99...A game report from Huntington North's 73-64 win over
4A #7 Warsaw...
"Sean had 29 points and nine rebounds. He had 11 points in the first
quarter, including 2 dunks to start the game and a 3pointer right after
that. Warsaw was down eight at the half, thanks to a 30 foot buzzer
beater by Joel Cotton (HN) to give the Vikes momentum. However, Warsaw
took the lead going into the final period. Senior Rick Hall (HN) and
Sean took over, combining for over 20 of the teams 29 points in the
final period of play. Warsaw made it look closer thanks to Chris Wiggins
2 bombs in the final minute. It was really a 15 point victory." (game
report by anonymous)
Here's a game summary from the Warsaw Times-Union.
2-16-99...A new scouting report from a couple of recent games...
"With Ray McCallum in attendance, Muncie South started with a 2-3 zone and
really packed it in. Kline was playing a wing in the corner along the
baseline. This allowed Huntington guard Rick Hall to hit a couple of threes.
Foister then moved Kline to the key and South subsequently changed to a 2-1-2.
This allowed him to be more active. As you know, the Huntington guards still
did not get him the ball enough. Kline did play the whole game against Muncie
South and was stronger than the rest. Playing man-to-man, Kline guarded a
quick 6'-3" player and did an excellent job. Early in the game, Kline was
blocked from behind on a dunk attempt and of course, was jeered by the crowd.
In the latter part of the fourth quarter, Kline received a pass ten feet from
the basket on the baseline and made an excellent move for a dunk. On his way
down the court he gave a two second stare at the Muncie crowd. No faces or
gestures. He does have "a fire in his belly."
The Kokomo game mirrored the Muncie game. A couple of dunks and twenty-some
points. Played against a zone the whole game. It seems that Kline hasn't
scored much until you see the stats at the end of the game. As you have
mentioned, he does do it all. Shoots the three, leads the break and plays the
middle, among other things." (scouting report by anonymous)
2-8-99...A scouting report on Kline's strengths and weaknesses...
"Strengths: He knows the game, just like every other Indiana high school
native. He knows that if your team is down 15 or so in the first quarter
not to force everything up to give your team a chance. He realizes there
is plenty of time left to win. He's a shooter and he knows when and where
to take a shot, he won't shoot from NBA range. He is beginning to become
a very good rebounder, blocking out has really improved. He can handle
the ball, but not like a point guard. Down low, he can work on anybody,
just talk to his friend Zach. He also knows the passing lanes very well.
Gets a lot of solo dunks.
Weaknesses: "Butterfingers." He always has at least one where he thinks
about the dunk, not catching the ball first. During a fast break, when
he dribbles, he usually gets out of control, and will be called for a
charge." (scouting report by anonymous)
2-6-99...Few will doubt Kline is a high Division I prospect
at the moment, but it is too early in his career to be narrowing a
list of choices. Four schools are currently among those likely to
get some serious consideration when the time comes (in alphabetical
order)... Indiana, Michigan State, NC State and Purdue. At the moment,
Indiana and Michigan State are showing the most interest, with
Purdue currently just scouting him. IU has been in contact the
longest which is a plus in their favor.
Now let's address some rumors. We've been hearing reports that
Kline will not play for Knight. Not true. He likes IU and he likes
Coach Knight. The only real obstacle to him not playing at IU is a
current shortage of scholarships (only 1 will be available for his
class unless more become available). Another popular rumor is a
possible package deal with Marion center Zach Randolph. Reports
early in the year pointed to a friendship between the players, which
have now evolved into the idea of a package deal. Not true. Although
the two are friends, they are not likely to allow the decisions of one
to influence the other. If we're talking package deals, Kline IS more
likely to go to the same program Indianapolis Pike sophomore guard
Chris Thomas chooses. Certainly not a package deal, but Thomas and
Kline are closer than Kline and Randolph. Since all three players have
Purdue on their lists, there is a chance they can all attend the same
program. But we've seen how players that wish to play together in
college usually end up parting ways when the time comes. Both Kline
and Thomas will be playing for Bloomington Red this year, as Austin
Parkinson and John Hamilton are also said to be.
2-6-99...Huntington North fell to Harrison in the finals of the
Olympic Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday, 64-59. The Vikes
were down 22 in the third quarter and came back to tie it at 57 with
a minute and a half remaining. However, Kline would not touch the ball
for the rest of the game. Coach Foister said in the postgame, "that
was the difference in tonights game, he brings us back, but doesn't
touch it in the last 90 seconds." Earlier that day with Bob Knight and
Bob Hammel in the stands watching, Huntington North beat Brownsburg
55-45. Sean scored 20 of his 26 in the second half. I'm sure Brandon
Jones knows how Kline must have felt playing in front of Knight.
A few weeks ago, Jones suffered his worst performance of the year in
front of an onlooking Frank Kendrick. On Saturday, Kline bricked the
only dunk of the season in front of Coach Knight.
12-19-98...Frank Kendrick continues to make the rounds of
high school games while his Purdue kids are finishing up finals.
Last night Kendrick was spotted at a Huntington North game
checking out 6'7 sophomore Sean Kline.
12-12-98...It's not like Zack Randolph surprises Sean Kline
like Randolph tends to surprise most of his competition. The two
consider themselves friends after spending time over the summer
playing ball together. But the two went head-to-head Saturday,
Kline scoring 27 and Randolph doing three better with 30 points.
Marion won 72-64, but Huntington North was in the game most of the
way.
11-30-98...Three from the school record, Kline hit for 36
points against Fort Wayne South. FW South came close at the end
of the third, 59-53, but a Huntington North 14-3 run put the game
out of reach. Kline scored on a combination of fast break
opportunities, perimeter shooting and five dunks. A major factor
in the game became the loss of 6-5 Brandon McLemore, who fouled out
leaving no one to handle Kline's size and strength.
