Shalicia Hurns is ranked as one of the top players in the
state of Indiana in the Class of 2000. Her game benefits from
her excellent ball-handling skills for what most schools would
identify as a 6'4 post player. Her perimeter skills and view of the
court has her out on the wing most of the time, a position she will
likely play in college. Not very strong on the inside, but versatile
enough to play anywhere from small forward out. Other weaknesses
include her freethrow shooting and her ability to take it up strong
on the drive from the wing, a skill that will be necessary for her to
lock up a small forward position in college.
Not looking to score her junior year, Shalicia still managed
13.1 points for the 13-8 Lady Rockets. She also averaged close to nine
rebounds, five assists and three steals, while shooting 46-percent from
the floor, 58-percent from the line and 37-percent from the perimeter.
Hurns was honored at the beginning of the year with an invitation to
attend the WBCA Elite Camp.
2-22-00...Broad Ripple (13-7) was knocked out of the 2000 IHSAA
tournament in the first game of sectional play by Indianapolis North
Central, 52-40. Shalicia was held to 12 points, eight under her season
average. Broad Ripple finishes the season 13-8.
1-24-00...After going on a five game winning streak and pushing their
record to 9-4 (2-0 conference), Broad Ripple dropped a pair of close games
last week to Tech and Chatard. Shalicia had another outstanding performance
against Tech with 27 points, but it wasn't enough to prevent the one point
loss. She also scored 14 points, hitting 2 of 3 shoots from the perimeter,
in a two point loss to Chatard. After 14 games, Hurns is averaging 16.5
points per game.
11-13-99...Purdue has received the LOI from the state's best
senior player Shalicia Hurns, officially making her a Boilermaker.
"Her size and athleticism will allow her to play both inside and on the
perimeter," says Coach Curry, "and she will be tough to defend. She has
benefited from outstanding high school and AAU coaches. It will be a joy
for them to see her compete at this level." For comments on other Purdue
signees, check out the Official Purdue basketball site for press
releases from the Athletic Department.
10-18-99...Purdue has received their fourth commitment from the class
of 2000. Indianapolis Broad Ripple's versatile wing player Shalicia Hurns
committed to the Boilermakers over the weekend during an official visit.
Hurns rates as the nation's 26th best prospect according to Fast Break,
and among the nation's most versatile. Her skill shave allowed her to
play positions from the point ot the post. For more info on the decision,
check out these articles from the Journal and Courier and the Indianapolis
Star.
7-25-99...Shalicia Hurns was one of two players invited to last
week's Nike All-American Camp for girls held at IUPUI in Indianapolis.
The 6'2 scorer showed the kind of footspeed that sets her apart from
her 6'2 peers. Already an early favorite for the 2000 Miss Basketball
title, Hurns has bounced back well from a mid-season accident that
left her with a broken wrist. In June, Hurns was the leading scorer
for the Junior All-Stars, averaging 15.5 points in their two exhibitions
against the Senior All-Star team.
11-20-98...A 98-99 season preview from the FifthQuarter...
"New head coach Steve Sermin will be bringing back the majority of a very
successful 1998 campaign that saw the Lady Rockets go 15-5. Returning from
that squad and leading Broad Ripple is junior standout 6'4 forward Shalicia
Hurns (13.1ppg, 6.3apg, 6.3rpg). Other starters include 5'9 guard Dishonda
Jewell (13.4ppg, 3apg), 5'7 guard Angela Chambers (10.6ppg, 3.6rpg), and
6'2 center Tia Boyd (8.1ppg, 5.9rpg). The Lady Rockets will have to replace
the production of Portia Flournoy (12.1ppg, 11.9rpg). Coach Sermin will
insert a third guard into the starting line-up for the 1998-99 season
Na'Shay Ransom (1ppg). Also at his disposal will be 5'8 forward Tamara
Price, 5'9 Sharee Anderson, and 5'6 guard Ashley Clark."
