Rodney Smith is a forward at Indianapolis Pike High School that
gave a verbal commitment to the Boilers at the beginning of his junior year.
Said to be the #1 recruiting target of Purdue in his class by Gene Keady.
Smith plays for Alan Darner at Pike High, father of former Boiler Linc
Darner. Smith also played during the summer of 96 on former Boiler guard
Mack Gadis' AAU team. He is athletic, playing a multitude of sports in
his prep career. Rodney finished second in a state punt, pass, and kick
contest at age 13, and was a 142-pound winner in a city wrestling
tournament.
Smith is successful due to his athleticism. He has very good hops
and is a spectacular dunk artist. He uses both hands well around the basket
and is getting better at taking the ball hard to the basket. He has a soft
touch and great shot to 15 feet. He needs to work on his passing skills,
court awareness and ball handling.
Going into his senior season, Smith still needs to finesse that
perimeter game as he will be a candidate for small forward in college.
Coach Darner claims Rodney's largest improvements have been in ball-handling
and slashing to the basket. And although a great leaper, Rodney needs
to watch being caught in the air on defense so much.
Rodney grew 3 inches during his sophomore season, averaging 11.7
points and 6.8 rebounds. He played junior varsity, and sparingly on
varsity as a freshman.
He has a career high of 23 points against Lawrence Central in a
four overtime loss on 1/10/97.
Keady on Smith: "Another great athlete. This young man can be a very
good forward here with a lot of work, on the weights and just being a part of
our program."
Alan Darner on Smith: "with his speed and athletic ability he has the
chance to be a real good Big Ten player. He plays a lot bigger than 6'6."
7-24-98...Team Indiana bounced back from a bruising defeat from
Michigan to take third place in the Wendys All-Star Classic. Indiana beat
Team Ohio 104-85 behind a team high 18 points from Maynard Lewis. Smith
added 13 points and 8 rebounds in his starting role with the team.
7-23-98...Team Michigan served up a little revenge against Team
Indiana on Wednesday, with a 112-97 victory in the first round of the
Wendys Classic basketball tournament. Indiana will face Team Ohio Thursday
to determine 3rd place. (stats below)
6-22-98...A scouting report on Rodney Smith from the exhibition game
against the Junior All-Stars last Wednesday..."Rodney Smith...Long armed
and strong. Good hands around the hoop. Had a great cradle dunk. Big through
the chest. Decent form on his shot. Effective at the head of the 1-3-1 the
All-Stars tried occassionally. Rodney is the current manifestation of any of
the countless 6-5/6-6 power guys that have played for Keady. (Todd Mitchell,
Justoin Jennings, etc.) Can shoot the open shot if not defended. Not sure he
can create his own. Reserve if current PU players stay eligible." (scouting
report by RMKFAN)
6-18-98...Rodney contributed 12 points in a winning effort on
Wednesday as the Senior All-Stars defeated the Junior All-Stars 133-92.
The three senior Purdue recruits shot a combined 83 percent from the floor
(15-18) and 86 percent from the line (6-7). Next up for the Senior All-Stars
is a matchup with the Kentucky All-Stars this Saturday in Frankfort,
Kentucky. For more details, including television coverage, follow this
link to the Events page. (stats
below)
5-5-98...Smith's senior AAU team, Spiece South, got bumped from
the state tournament quarterfinals this past weekend. The Anderson Warriors
won the game 85-83 on a 10-footer from the baseline by Marion HS senior
guard Andre Betts. Anderson will move on to the state semifinals along with
Indy Magic, Riverside AAU, and Bloomington Aces. Smith led all scorers with
25 points.
4-27-98...Smith continues to show his great potential on the court.
After being named MVP of the Tournament of Champions, followed by a 14 point
performance that helped solidify his position on the Indiana All-Star team,
Smith exploded for 25 points at the North/South All-Star game in Martinsville.
John Allison's teammate from New Palestine HS, T.J. Ott, led the team with
29 points.
4-7-98...Rodney finished with 14 points and a couple of highlight
dunks Sunday during the Top40 Workout. For more details on the game, including
his battles with 6'7 Djibril Kante, visit this Bloomington Herald link.
4-6-98...Click here for an article from the Indianapolis Star on the
progress of the three incoming Indiana high school recruits.
4-4-98...Smith capped off a dream season Saturday evening with a
Tournament of Champions title and was named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player. Smith only scored 8 points in the final game against Lafayette
Central Catholic, but his scoring wasn't much needed as Pike easily handled
the 1A champ 87-44. After 2 fouls by early in the second half, Smith
was held out of the game until the third quarter and only played a total
of 20 minutes, finishing with only the two fouls he received from early
in the game. (complete game stats below)
4-3-98...In the first game of the Tournament of Champions in
Indianapolis, Rodney had a large role in defeating Class 3A state champion
Cathedral. Smith led all scorers with 20 points and tied with two other
Pike players for 6 rebounds. Pike moves on to the Tournament championship
game Saturday against Class 1A champion Lafayette Central Catholic who
defeated 2A champ Alexandria tonight in a double overtime thriller.
3-28-98...Pike High won its first boys basketball championship with
a 57-54 victory over Marion, a team that had previously been 6-0 in state
championship games. Pike forced 21 turnovers and scored 23 points off those
turnovers, using man-to-man defense most of the game, switching to a
1-3-1 zone in the final minutes to mix things up. Pike made four freethrows
in the final 44.6 seconds of play, two each by Rodney Smith and Mike
Cambell, and defensed a last second 3-pointer by Andrae Betts well enough
to come away with the three point win. Smith's foul shots with 10 seconds
remaining came from a steal by Campbell. "Big players make big plays,"
said Smith, "and our seniors have made their reputations doing that."
Zach Randolph was the lone Marion (24-3) player in double figures with 18.
Pike moves on to next weekends Tournament of Champions, a contest that will
feature the four class champions. Pike will play 3A champ Cathedral on
Friday, with the winner playing in the final game Saturday night at
8:00pm. The Saturday opponent will be the winner of the Lafayette Catholic
vs Alexandria game. Pike has met Cathedral once this season, defeating them
back in February 73-68 at Pike. A scouting report from the game..."Rodney
Smith impressed me more than he has. Will be a good player for the
Boilers in time at the small forward position. Will need to develop
a better shot but his form is not bad. If Randolph grows any more he
may be lethal in the post with his strength, good hands and he keeps the
ball high and gets it on the glass quickly. I wonder if he might get
invited to the Nike camp now. Kincaid is a nice player but I don't
think he is as good as the Hoop Scoop and others rate him. He does not
handle the ball well for a 6-1 guy, doesn't defend well and is very
frail. Chris Thomas had a nightmare game but he has enormous
potential. He needs to learn to play the game at a faster pace and be
more aggressive. Maybe he just looked casual cause that Andre Betts guy
was so quick. Andre will be a steal for a low Division One or Div II
program. Best team won." (scouting report by Peegs)
Smith on making the clutch freethrows with 8 seconds left..."I was
thinking about shooting in the backyard with my dad. He's always saying to
use fingertip control and follow through."
Smith on Marion center Zach Randolph..."Randolph is a great player.
He's so big we couldn't get around him."
3-26-98...The 1998 4A championship game is set, with #1 Pike up
against #4 Marion High at 8:30pm on Saturday. A look at the two teams...
#1 Pike High (Indianapolis)...Overall record 27-1, 9-1 against top25 Indiana
high school teams and 18-1 against teams rated in the state in the top64,
has had the state's 9th toughest schedule, Sagarin rating of 103.15,
features Mr. Basketball candidate 6'2 Isaac Kincaid (major talent but
currently unsigned, 18.4 ppg, .373 3pt%), 6'7 senior Rodney Smith (Purdue
signee, 13.9 ppg, .621 fg%) and 6'0 Chris Thomas (top national freshman, 13.8
ppg, .471 3pt%, 4.6 apg).
# 4 Marion High (Marion)...Overall, record 24-2, 7-2 against top25 Indiana
high school teams and 12-2 against teams rated in the state in the top64,
has had the state's 15th toughest schedule. Sagarin rating of 95.99,
features two good big men in 6'7 Zach Randolph (strong, 17 ppg, 12 rpg)
and 6'5 soph Matt Backs (4.6 ppg) and three good accompanying senior
players in 6'4 forward JoJo Williams (16.3 ppg), 5'8 Kyle Chin (10.0 ppg) and
and 5'8 guard Andrae Betts (12.9).
3-13-98...The state's #1 team, the Anderson Indians, fell to #2 Pike
on Friday as all-state guard and Illinois State recruit Eric Bush was limited
to 12 points. The Red Devils gained their fourth regional title and their
first since 1987. Isaac Kincaid led Pike with 23 points. Rodney Smith had
8 points. The ability of Pike to hit freethrows down the stretch sealed the
win as Anderson attempted to foul their way back into the game the final
five minutes. Pike scored its final 13 points from the line.
3-7-98...Pike moved on to the sectional finals and defeated the
only team to blemish their record this season, Indianapolis North Central
69-66. The sectional win sets up a matchup with #1 Anderson in regionals on
Friday at Anderson. A scouting report from the Pike/North Central game...
"The Pike and North Central game was Indiana high school basketball at its
best. The game was played in spurts with a final Pike run at the end of the
game being the difference. Rodney Smith played great. I have heard many
conflicting reports about his size. I was expecting a player with the stature
of Herb Dove (6-5 and skinny). However, Smith has a build more like Ian
Stanback (6-6 and muscular looking). (I base the height judgment on the fact
that Pike has a number of 6-4 and 6-5 guys, who Rodney was clearly taller
than). On the court, Rodney appears very athletic, he goes to the hole well,
and in this game he hit a few mid-range jumpers. He finished with 22 points.
Everything he did was with-in the flow of the offense, he never forced any
shots. I think Rodney is going to be a nice addition to Purdue." (scouting
report by Thom)
3-3-98...Pike advances to the sectional semifinals with a 66-64 win
over Noblesville. The game was sealed by a pair of freethrows each by Isaac
Knicaid and freshman and Purdue prospect Chris Thomas, followed by great
defense of Noblesville's go-to guy Mark Coverdale. Rodney and Chris Thomas
led all Pike scorers with 12 each. Next up...Indianapolis Broad Ripple on
Friday.
3-3-98...Pike High enters the 1998 IHSAA tournament as the statistical
favorite to win the whole thing according to end of the season Sagarin
calculations. Pike's road will not be easy, as the Noblesville sectional is
rated the most difficult in the state. Pike (98.20) has a first round match
against Noblesville (93.11) at Noblesville. But with a Sagarin home court
advantage figured in, Pike is still favored by 3 points over the Millers.
Waiting for Pike in the second game will be the winner of the Broadripple
(77.71) / Hamilton S.E. (69.22) game. The opponent in the finals will either
be North Central (90.94) or Carmel (84.50).
Pike finished the regular season ranked #1 according to the Sagarin
rating system, which figures in opponent strength, schedule strength, and
margin of victory. Pike had the state's #17 toughest schedule, finishing
5-1 against top 25 teams and 13-1 against teams rated among the top 64.
Sagarin ratings are furnished by Jeff Sagarin at the Indiana High
School Basketball Ratings Page on his website. Refer to this site to
figure out how to approximate winners and margin of victory.
2-12-98...Follow this link for a story on Rodney Smith from the
Purdue Exponent.
1-20-98...Pike High is the new #1 team in the state of Indiana
according to the poll released on Monday. Pike rose to #1 after defeating
Perry Meridian 75-59 Saturday night to take the Marion County Tournament
title. "We want to be #1," said Coach Darner. "We have to learn how to play
with pressure." Rodney Smith was named to the Marion County All-Tournament
team after scoring 15 points in the final game.
1-17-98...Indianapolis Perry Meridian (10-3) is the only thing
standing in the way of a #1 ranking for Pike High (13-0), currently #2. Friday
night saw current #1 Bloomington North fall by three points to rival
Bloomington South. Pike will play Perry Meridian tonight in the finals of
the Marion County Tourney.
1-12-98...Scouting report from the first round game against
North Central in the Marion County tournament..."Rod looked much better
today and was an animal inside! He had some thunderous dunks! One off of
the opening tip! Shot looks good and he handled the ball better. He has
a mean streak in him! Maybe not a redshirt candidate afterall. A person
beside me said he still has a sore ankle. He shot one shot in the middle
(8' away) of the lane in traffic and came down and went back up and
grabbed his own missed shot and threw it down so fast I never even saw
him hit the floor. I watched him in warm ups tonight and he has got a
nice soft shot to 16'. Much, much better performance today." (scouting
report by Tom)
1-9-98...Scouting report from the Lawrence Central game..."I missed
the first quarter as it went awfully fast and they must be on a "different"
time as me. Apparently, Rod got two quick fouls before I got there and
didn't play the second quarter. He started the third and played about
three minutes before he was taken out and then played most the fourth. In
the third he had the ball stolen from a backside guard that helped out when
he started to spin twice. He appeared to have a soft turn around out to
15'. One counted and one was made as another player on Pike called timeout
and nullified the basket. Once he rebounded along the baseline with two
other LC players and got tangled up with them. It got a little rough and
then he went up and THREW it down in traffic. Ref said foul before shot
and he hit 1/2 free throws I think. He faced the basket only one time and
missed a 15' baseline shot. I never saw much of him that game and my
impressions could be very off as a result. However, he seems stronger than
average and works at posting up. Most the time he seems a little high to
me and it causes poor spacing with the guards. He has a soft shot, can
jump and went up and down the court okay last night. The other team was
well aware of him and it looked like he got a little frustrated by some of
his under the breath comments and a shoulder smack he put on a guard when
away from the ball. It was payback time I guess. Anyway, my limited
exposure concerns are that he didn't face the basket and at 6'6" he must
learn to face the basket and be able to dribble. His ball handling might
be suspect. He relied on posting up his player and spinning and shooting a
turn around jump shot. He never posted down low and I just became
suspicious that he wasn't comfortable facing the basket. He worked hard
and tried several times to take a charge. Most the times nothing was
called either way. He will have to improve his position though in the Big
Ten. I like the potential, but saw him last night as a red shirt canidate
that COULD turn into a very good player." (scouting report by Tom)
12-19-97...Frank Kendrick was onhand for the game against Carmel,
but due to a twisted ankle in pre-game warmups, Smith joined him in being
a spectator. Even with Smith out of the game, Pike rolled to a 10 point win
over Carmel. A player getting strong looks from Purdue, Chris Thomas,
impressed as only a freshman. He has a very sweet outside shot, with
excellent form. He also runs the floor very well and already looks to be
a hot target for major Division I schools down the road. This isn't the
first time Kendrick has seen Thomas, as Thomas has played at Purdue during
past summer camps.
12-09-97...Scouting report from the game against Martinsville...
"He went 6 of 6 from the field in the first half and ended up with 13 points at
halftime. In the second half, he hit about 5 of 7 and on the night probably
tallied around 24 (* NOTE: Stats below). Right at the end of the third,
he took a fast break alley-oop from about 1 ft. above the rim and threw it
down with great power! After the dunk, he came down grimacing, holding his
right leg. I hoped it wasn't the foot he broke previously this summer. Luckily,
it was just a bad cramp in his calf. This kid has good speed, AMAZING hops,
(the likes of J Jennings) and has a beautiful stroke out to about 18 ft. He
needs to work on his dribbling, though, if he is to be a Big Ten wing. I'm
very optimistic about his future with the Boilers. He has a very good demeanor
on the court. He was often smiling after tough fouls on him - no smart alec
looks, just genuinely seemed to be having a good time. This is VERY IMPRESSIVE
considering that his coach (Alan Darner-father of Linc), runs an offense that
doesn't even get him many touches. He was still very positive on the court,
even though he was frustrated, which shows he puts team before himself. Pike
won 99-80." (scouting report by Harvester)
12-5-97...Go here for another article from the Indianapolis Star.
11-26-97...A 97-98 season preview by the Indianapolis Star.
11-18-97...Conflicting reports on the state of eligibilty for
Smith. While one newspaper states Rodney is currently taking SAT courses to
increase his GPA, another states that on his last attempt he received a
"qualifying score". His GPA remains somewhere close to 2.5/4.0. The Purdue
staff and his coach is confident he will qualify.
11-14-97...Rodney Smith beat all of his senior peers, signing
with Purdue on the first day of the early signing period. Although his foot
has been sore during practice, he hopes to lead Pike High school to a
state championship, if they can manage to get out of sectionals. Analyst
Van Coleman calls Smith the player in the class most likely to contribute
his first year in college. With Smith's current GPA, he is qualified to
play his freshman year.
10-19-97...Rodney Smith had a front row seat on Friday at Mackey
Magic. Sitting behind the bench with the other recruits, he could be seen
laughing it up with the players.
9-26-97...Rodney Smith now joins his coach is wondering why
someone would suggest he was headed to Butler, following Rylan Hainje. Smith
is a Boiler and he is excited about attending the upcoming Mackey Madness open
practice on October 17th.
9-23-97...In a conversation today with Coach Alan Darner, Rodney
is again participating in drills and open gyms, after suffering a broken
bone in his foot early this summer. A pin was inserted into his foot for
stability, but the injury forced Rodney to sit out of all the major summer
camps, including Nike. As you can see from recently released rankings,
if you miss the summer evaluating camps, your rankings severely suffer. A
similar situation last year with Cam Stephens, which sent his top 20
rankings down around 50. But then, what do rankings really mean anyway...
And to clear up a recent rumor...Rodney is not headed to Butler,
and to Coach Darner's knowledge, Purdue has not mentioned sending Rodney
to prep school next year.
7-21-97...Rodney Smith was unable to attend the Nike All-American
Camp this year due to a broken foot suffered in the first scrimmage this
summer against the Indiana All-Stars.
5-1-97...All three Indiana high school juniors who have currently
given verbals to Purdue will be found on the same team this weekend. Lewis,
Allison and Rodney Smith will be on the Spiece Gym Rats South 17-under
squad. The first game of the weekend for the team will be a 7:00pm match
in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility (next door to Mackey Arena) with
Brooklyn Basketball USA. On Saturday morning, Spiece will play at 11:00am
on the same court in the IAF against Cincinatti AAU #2. The final game
of pool play will be at 3:30pm on Saturday against the Illinois Warriors #1,
again in the IAF. The Illinois Warriors team in 1995 featured Mike
Robinson and last years team featured the duo of Sergio McClain and
Marcus Griffin. Depending upon the results of the three pool games, Spiece
will either begin the tournament on Saturday evening at 6:00pm or 9:00pm.
4-21-97...Rodney and fellow Purdue recruit Maynard Lewis have
been chosen to play on the 1997 Indiana Junior All-Star team. They
both have been chosen to be a part of the core group that will play
in games on June 18 and 25. Follow this link to the Events page to
read more about the games.
3-23-97...Rodney Smith was leading on points going into the final
round of the 1997 IHSAA slam dunk competition, but Kenneth Routh of
Charleston completed two dunks garnering perfect 10's to steal the title
away. Smith finished second with 55.5 points, to Routh's 60.
2-6-97...Indianapolis Pike missed a rare opportunity last night
to be the only team to defeat all of the teams ranked in the #1 spot
this season. New Albany, ranked #11, slipped past the giant killers
with a 70-58 win. Rodney Smith had a team high 17 points in the loss.
New Albany opened the season on top of the polls but later relinquished
the spot to Indianapolis Ben Davis, and then Indianapolis North Central.
Pike knocked then #1 Ben Davis out of the top spot on 12/7 and then
defeated then #1 North Central on 1/25.
1-3-97...A scouting report from the Plainfield vs. Pike game.
Rodney seems very athletic. He jumped center at the tipoff, even though
Pike has a player who is 6'9". Rodney only scored 2 points in the first
half and I was unable to stay for much of the second half. Pike won by
20. He didn't seem to play as much as I thought he would. Coach Alan
Darner only had Rodney in there about 50% of the time. Rodney seems
very unselfish and did not really look to score much. He didn't seem to
hustle very well and the coach got on him several times about that.
Rodney had several turnovers, doing stupid things like passing the ball
while he was in the air. His stroke seems quite good and he has decent
range, but he shot so few times during the game that it was difficult to
get a real good assessment of his range. I think Rodney has a lot of
potential, but needs a lot of work. At least he has a great coach in
Alan Darner and should improve greatly over the next 2 years before
coming to Purdue. (scouting report by Randy Kindig) Rodney finished
the game with a team high 17 points.
12-01-96...A scouting report from the Muncie Central vs. Pike
game. Rodney is a exceptional athelete but he has a lot of hot dog in him.
He has been playing to much aau ball. He was in foul trouble most of the
game and Alan Darner his coach was obviously mad at him. He does not
appear to have exceptional hops nor is he an outstanding shot although
he has good form on his shot and I believe that part of his game will come
along. He reminds me a lot of BSU's Bonzi Wells. I would hope he would
have a better attitude than Bonzi which I am sure he does. Rodney is very
quick and can handle the ball well in the open court. Pike lost by three
points. Rodney only scored around 10 points but he only played about
15-18 minutes of the game. (scouting report by Bill Wilkinson)
9-21-96...Rodney Smith made a visit to the Purdue campus this week.
This visit is another in a series of unofficial visits that Rodney has
taken to Purdue. This most recent one calms fears that Smith might reconsider
his verbal due to the signing of Cameron Stephens.
9-05-96...Here's some things Prep Stars had to say about Rodney
Smith, "...a marvelous athlete with fine skills, turned lots of heads
with his brilliant play in the Spiece Run'N Slam All-Star Classic at West
Lafayette (IN), the AAU National 16 and Under Championship Tournament at
Fayetteville (NC), and the Adidas Summer Shootout in Columbus Ohio, where
he made the 12-man all-tournament team. He has the potential to be an
immediate impact player for the Boilermakers." Prep Stars identified him
as a "blue-chip" prospect and national top 30 calibre.
Smith is also said to be an excellent student, who is interested
in going into medicine.
8-27-96 Rodney Smith and Vincent Hart (who is rumored to be strongly
considering Purdue) were named to the all-tournament team of the Adidas
Columbus Shootout.
8-08-96...Making it very clear that he wanted to be a part
of the Purdue program, Rodney Smith committed early. It will not be
until November of 1997 when he can officially sign a letter of intent.
Smith chose Purdue because of his contacts with Coach Keady and Coach
Kendrick. He has taken two unofficial visits to Purdue. "I wanted to
go there because it's a Big Ten school and it's close to home," said
Smith. "I've always liked Purdue better than Indiana." His parents
Parnell and Schawndolyn Smith support his decision. "We've always
liked the program and we feel it's the one that best suits his talent,"
Parnell said. "Coach Keady told us he was the No. 1 junior he was
looking at. He got a lot of good looks this summer from schools like
IU and Stanford." But the lack of inquiries from other schools won't
be missed. "I can concentrate on basketball and not be worried when
the scouts are at the game," added Rodney.
