Player Summary

Maynard Lewis has been a target of not only Purdue and Indiana for a few years now, but also of other schools around the nation not limited to Syracuse, Michigan, UCLA, UCONN and Cincinnati. His coach has never seen such a recruiting blitz in his 33 years of coaching. Coaches value Maynard's all around game and team play. His strengths include dribble penetration and slashing ability and he adds a good outside shot to the mix. Defensively he excels and is a good rebounder for a 6'0 guard. Many predict that his scoring average could be much higher if he took more of the scoring load, but his passing ability helps to spread the shots around. If you had to point to a weakness, his coach Pat Rady would say he needs to be more consistent and work on handling the frustration of always having the state's best defenders guarding him. Not unlike most juniors in high school, he can use some weight and some strength but could continue to grow another 1 to 2 inches before college. Maynard also has a younger brother David who played varsity as a freshman. Lewis played for a 15-and-under Terre Haute Boys Club AAU team that finished 29-11 and participated in Youth Basketball of America National Tournament in Lakeland, Fla. the summer of 1994. Later that summer he was picked up by Bloomington Red and participated in the AAU National Tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. As a freshman he started varsity all but one game and averaged 13 points for a 14-7 team. In that first season he had a season high of 22 points while being defended by Damon Frierson, who would go on to win the Indiana Mr. Basketball title in 1995. The summer following his freshman season found him again on the Bloomington Red 16-and-under team along side Jamaal Davis. The team finished as state runner-up and went on to finish 6th at the National AAU Tournament in Oklahoma City and later made the elite eight at the Nike Invitational in Las Vegas. He went on to start every game as a sophomore at Terre Haute South and increased both his scoring average (19.5 ppg) and his team's reacord (17-4). Lewis began to show himself as a perimeter threat when he hit 16 of 25 threes to win the Terre Haute sectional 3-point championship. After a rather quiet summer, Lewis entered his junior season on a team ranked #7 in the state. He would go on to have his best statistical season to date, taking his team to the regional semis only to get beat by eventual state champion Bloomington North. Lewis finished his junior season as TH South's third leading career scorer behind Will Uzzell and Michael Joyner. Maynard Lewis verbally committed to play for Purdue on April 17, 1997. He will be the first Terre Haute player on the Purdue squad since Terry Dischinger. Keady on Lewis: "I think he is one of the best guards in the nation, so we're very happy to sign him. I think he'll be a tremendous athlete in our press and fast break. He has a good attitude and I like his demeanor on the court." Bruce Weber on Lewis: "He's very similar to Jaraan Cornell or Troy Lewis. He's a good all-around player. Maynard is a cool, casual kid who just does his job." Kendrick on Lewis: "We'd known about him since his sophomore year, and the first time I saw him I knew he was a first class person, from a first class family. I knew that he was the kind of person we want in the Purdue Family."

Current Player News

7-25-98...Maynard was selected to the Wendy's Classic All-Tournament team along with Noblesville's Tom Coverdale. In the three years of the Classic, Indiana leads the series with a record of 4-2, with Ohio, Illinois and Michigan all tied at 3-3. 7-24-98...Team Indiana bounced back from a bruising defeat from Michigan to take third place in the Wendys All-Star Classic. Indiana beat Team Ohio 104-85 behind a team high 18 points from Maynard Lewis. 7-23-98...In the Wendys Classic matchup between Indiana and Michigan, Lewis found himself as the unfortunate center of attention. Michigan defeated Indiana 112-97 in the first round of games in this year's Classic. Michigan coach Glen Donahue, speaking on Lewis, said "From what I was told, Lewis was the best player on their team, and I told Curtis [McFall] that was his job. He did it well." McFall would go on to score 24 points to lead all scorers, while Lewis was held to 11. (stats below) 6-18-98...Lewis led the Senior Indiana All-Star team in scoring with 18 in a tune-up against the Junior All-Stars. The Senior All-Stars take on the Kentucky All-Star team this Saturday in Frankfort, Kentucky. For more information, including television coverage, follow this link to the Events page. (stats below) 6-15-98...New article on Maynard showing the knee is ready to go for the Indiana All-Star series. Link to this article from the Indy Star. 5-5-98...Lewis' senior AAU team, Spiece South, got bumped from the state tournament quarterfinals this past weekend. The Anderson Warriors won the game 85-83 on a 10-footer from the baseline by Marion HS senior guard Andre Betts. Anderson will move on to the state semifinals along with Indy Magic, Riverside AAU, and Bloomington Aces. Lewis finished with 20 points. 4-27-98...According to the coaching staff at Terre Haute South, Maynard continues to make daily improvements in strength and is expected to be back to 100% by the All-Star scrimmages in June. 4-18-98...One of the reasons Maynard chose Purdue was the members of coaching staff were very honest with him during his recruitment. And one thing is for sure...Lewis will play at the 2-guard at Purdue. Bruce Weber indicates that Alan Eldridge and Tony Mayfield will handle the point guard responsibilities for the team next year, moving Lewis to the 2-guard with Oregon State transfer Carson Cunningham. "In our system, the 1 doesn't score," says Frank Kendrick. "If you want to be a scorer and the 1, you shouldn't come here. The 1's job is to get the ball to the 2 and the other scorers. Are you going to saddle a player like Maynard Lewis with that? We want him to put the ball in the hole." It is still unknown if Lewis will redshirt his first year at Purdue, but the coaching staff did say they would wait until the fifth week of practice to sort out who they think should or shouldn't redshirt. 4-12-98...Lewis finished second in the 1998 Mr. Basketball race to Noblesville's Tom Coverdale. The race was primarily between the two all-state guards, but their combined votes failed to even reach half of the available ballots cast. 159 of the 288 ballots were spread out among 21 different other players. The 288 vote total is rather shameful, considering 365 ballots were cast in the 1996 Mr. Basketball race (featuring Kevin Ault, Lamont Roland, Michael Lewis and Jaraan Cornell). With players the likes of Lewis, Coverdale, Smith, Kincaid, Duany and Bush to choose from, some people just couldn't decide who to vote for and just abstained? It is time to shore up the voting ranks. Similar to Chicago politics, I would guess a large handful of the voters are actually dead. 4-7-98...Lewis was the second leading scorer for the South squads on Sunday during the Top40 Workout, and was also named the most outstanding outside shooter. For more details on the game, visit this Bloomington Herald link. 4-6-98...Click here for an article from the Indianapolis Star on the progress of the three incoming Indiana high school recruits. 3-4-98...Returning to the court getting applause by Terre Haute fans and most of the Mooresville fans also, Maynard Lewis was on the floor for what would be his last game as a high school player. Still not near 100 percent it was obvious that Lewis' movements were not as crisp as his play before the knee injury. But he had the courage to play the game, and finished with 11 points in the 58-32 loss. "I think he gave an awful good effort for what he's been through," said coach Pat Rady. 2-27-98...Lewis will dress for Senior Night tonight against Indy Arlington, but isn't likely to play. However, Lewis did go through a light practice on Thursday and will practice again on Saturday and next Monday. At that time, the coaches will determine if he will be ready for Tuesday's sectional game against Mooresville. The coaches are looking at a maximum time of three minutes per quarter if he plays at all. 2-24-97...As Maynard continues to improve and work on his rehabilitation, optimism creeps back into the picture. Although slight, there is a chance that Lewis can return to the floor sometime during the upcoming Indiana state tournament. But it will depend on his teammates getting the team through sectionals and maybe regionals before Lewis is capable of returning. If that happens, then Terre Haute South will identify itself as one of the best teams in the state. To get out of sectionals, South will have to defeat the state's #11 team Mooresville, then likely have to get through the state's #9 team Terre Haute North in the sectional semis. 2-7-98...If you are interested in sending cards to Lewis concerning his injury and surgery, address them to Terre Haute High School, 3737 South 7th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47802, Attention: Maynard Lewis. Cards and letters are welcomed at that address. 2-6-98...The bad news for Maynard Lewis and Terre Haute South today will turn into good news for Maynard's college career. Dr. Shelbourne confirmed today that Lewis has a broken knee cap and surgery is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:30pm. Although he will miss the remainder of his senior season, he will be able to play at Purdue pain free once corrected. Lewis has been bothered by pain each of the past three years, with the pain increasing as each year progressed. The injury is being called a "stress" break. Due to a weak knee bone, the knee ligaments were creating a force on the knee cap which eventually caused it to break. However, there was no damage to the tendons and ligaments. After rehab, the doctors feel that his knee will be stronger than ever. Rehab is scheduled for 2 months. Lewis hopes to return to form in time for the Indiana All-Star games this summer. 2-5-98...Normally when a Purdue recruit visits campus, it is looked upon as a good thing. That won't be the case tomorrow, as Lewis makes the drive up from Terre Haute to hear if he will be able to finish out his senior season. He is coming to Purdue to meet with Dr. Don Shelbourne, who will examine MRI results on his knee. Complaining of what was thought to be tendonitis for the past few weeks, the pain became too much to ignore last weekend against Ben Davis. Lewis met with doctors earlier this week, and followed up with an MRI. Now, it will be the job of Dr. Shelbourne to interpret all the data and come up with a recommendation. Shelbourne is widely known as a sports injury specialist, having worked on players from Purdue, Indiana and the Indianapolis Colts. Just over a year ago, he was clearing loose cartilage out of Kelly Komara's knee. Maynard has not been practicing this week, trading wind sprints for a pair of crutches. Best case senario...tendonitis and some time off to recover. Worse case senario...cracked knee cap and a season on the bench. More should be known later today. 1-12-98...It's nice to have an "off" night and still score 17 points. In a 63-62 win over Indianapolis Chatard, Lewis didn't shoot the ball very well but made up for it in other areas. He finished a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards, and was 2 assists shy of a triple-double. Picking up the scoring slack was Maynard's younger brother David who finished with a career high 16 points. 1-3-98...Lewis' scoring average currently ranks him as the state's #6 scorer with 27.1. The leaders are Brian Wray (3A Plymouth) 30.6, Wes Cox (3A Franklin County) 30.0, Tom Coverdale (4A Noblesville) 28.7, Clint Keown (3A Evansville Memorial) 28.5, and Rob Kent (4A Jennings County) 27.4. All six of the state's top scorers are seniors. 12-27-97...The Hall of Fame Classic was billed as a a battle of Mr. Basketball candidates, pitting 4 of the better teams in the state. Purdue's representative at the tournament represented well, tallying stats above his season averages up to the tournament. In the first game against Class 3A #1 Delta, Terre Haute South came up short with a 65-57 loss. Delta showed great defense in the game, holding Lewis' teammates to 35 percent shooting from the floor. Lewis finished the game shooting 61 percent, often forcing some shots against the pressure. More impressive was a game high 14 rebounds from the 6'2 standout. The Delta loss put South into the consolation game against 4A #7 LaPorte. South handled LaPorte with a 69-55 victory behind Lewis' 22 points. Against the strong competition, Lewis increased his play across the board. With season-to-date statistics in parenthesis (up to the Classic), Maynard averaged for the two game tournament .523 from the floor (.514), .500 from the perimeter (.352), 10.5 rebounds (5.6), and 4.5 assists (4.4). His two game totals were 55 points, 21 rebounds, 8 3-pointers and 9 assists. 12-19-97...Maynard Lewis became the Terre Haute South High career scoring leader, throwing in 28 points in a 72-40 win over West Vigo. 12-17-97...The newest state scoring leaders chart for 12/16 has Maynard in 6th place through six games. Other than Lewis, no player in the top25 scorers list has played more than 5 games. 12-12-97...According to the first released list of state high school scoring leaders, Maynard ranked #2 in the state behind Plainfield's Gavin Groninger. However, you will notice that Maynard was not included in that list. The IHSAA puts together the scoring lists and releases them every Tuesday through the basketball season. The IHSAA also expects high schools to report their statistics to them, which is probably the reason Lewis was left off the first list. He has averaged more than 30 points in 4 of 6 games now for Coach Rady, and through 6 games is now averaging 26.8 points. 11-14-97...Maynard Lewis signed with Purdue on Thursday. Keady commented "I think he is one of the best guards in the nation." 11-3-97...Follow this link to a good story on Maynard Lewis from the Indianapolis Star. 10-19-97...All three verballed 98-99 season recruits were in attendance for the Mackey Madness on October 17th. 10-14-97...Lewis, commenting on the NCAA investigation..."Coach Keady called me and said everything is OK. Purdue is the school I want to go to." 7-15-97...Some good reviews coming in about Lewis' play at the Nike Camp. Ultimate Hoops posted on their site that Lewis showed signs of real promise and summed up his game as "a tough little player, a very nice shooter, and has excellent defensive skills." 5-31-97...Maynard was selected as the MVP in the Merrillville 17-under AAU tournament this past weekend, hitting the game winning 3-pointer in the championship game. 5-1-97...All three Indiana high school juniors who have currently given verbals to Purdue will be found on the same team this weekend. Lewis, Allison and Rodney Smith will be on the Spiece Gym Rats South 17-under squad. The first game of the weekend for the team will be a 7:00pm match in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility (next door to Mackey Arena) with Brooklyn Basketball USA. On Saturday morning, Spiece will play at 11:00am on the same court in the IAF against Cincinatti AAU #2. The final game of pool play will be at 3:30pm on Saturday against the Illinois Warriors #1, again in the IAF. The Illinois Warriors team in 1995 featured Mike Robinson and last years team featured the duo of Sergio McClain and Marcus Griffin. Depending upon the results of the three pool games, Spiece will either begin the tournament on Saturday evening at 6:00pm or 9:00pm. 4-21-97...Lewis and fellow Purdue recruit Rodney Smith have been chosen to play on the 1997 Indiana Junior All-Star team. They both have been chosen to be a part of the core group that will play in games on June 18 and 25. Follow this link to the Events page to read more about the games. 4-17-97...Maynard Lewis has chosen Purdue University over IU and a host of other programs across the nation. He has accepted an invitation to play at the Nike Camp in Indy this summer and will also be touring with the Spiece Jeansmen 17-and-under AAU team this summer along with fellow Purdue recruits Rodney Smith and John Allison. 2-11-97...Maynard Lewis passed the 1,000-point mark for his career as the Braves defeated Indianapolis Broad Ripple 72-70. Lewis left the game with 1,017 points to stand No. 6 on the school's career list. Lewis is the first player in school history to reach 1,000 points as a junior. 1-2-97...Lewis was in attendance for the IU vs. Michigan State game in Bloomington.
