Madison Layden is one of the top recruits in Indiana. A two-time state champion, the Kokomo native is a combo guard who can manufacture shots all over the court. Her versatile offensive and defensive games have brought championships in both summer ball and high school. She excels in her mid-range game and had averaged over 40-percent from the perimter her entire high school career. Active in a halfcourt offense with and without the ball, Layden has great vision on the court to drive the lane and find an open teammate for an easy basket. Consistently ranked as the no. 1 player in the state of Indiana.
The three-time letter winner plays basketball, volleyball, and tennis, and is coached in all three by her mother Kathie. Both of her parents played basketball at the University of Evansville.
Layden averaged 21.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 5.1 steals per game as a junior in 2018-19. Northwestern won a second-consecutive Class 3A state championship 61-39 over Benton Central. Layden had 19 points in the championship game, including 10-of-12 from the free throw line. The 10 made free throws, as well as the 12 attempted free throws, were both Class 3A state championship records. As a result of two championships in a row, Northwestern will be bumped up to Class 4A for the 2019-20 season.
As a sophomore on the Tigers’ first state championship team, Layden averaged team highs of 18.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.1 steals per game, shooting 50.4 percent from the field overall, 42.4 percent from the perimeter, and 89.1 percent from the free throw line. Northwestern won their first ever state championship in a 63-42 Class 3A finals win over Greensburg. In the final game, Layden had 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and six steals.
Committed to Purdue on September 30, 2018 over Ball State, Butler, Illinois, Iowa, Marquette, Michigan and Toledo. Plans to major in Pharmacy.
Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp..."Madison is a versatile player who can help us at the 1-4 positions. Her ability to see up the floor and make the pass is one of her biggest strengths. Her size and length will allow her to cause havoc on defense. She has an incredible basketball IQ and court vision that allows her to make the players around her better. She has competed at the highest level and understands how to win championships. She will bring a winning mentality to our program." (Purdue SID, November 14, 2019)
Collegiate Girls Scouting Report scout Dan Olsen..."Fundament off-guard manufactures shots, rises on jumper in mid-range game, keeps the defense honest to the arc; executes in half-court game; constantly moving, flourishes in a system; unselfish, drives and dishes in traffic." (Journey to the Tourney, November 2018)
Scouting Indiana Girls scouting report..."Madison is long, athletic in all directions, and she’s highly skilled. She has always been more of a point forward and handled the ball, but this July she is shooting it with consistency and better range. She is the daughter of two coaches, so she has built up a nice savvy and feel for the game. I really like where she is now, and I think she still has a high ceiling to continue developing. Watch for her to be recruited pretty high very soon." (Scouting Indiana Girls, July 2017)
Collegiate Girls Scouting Report scout Dan Olsen..."Agile guard brings size to the back court; handles and attacks, pushes tempo and passes with purpose; produces in half-court set; manufactures shots, keeps the defense honest with range to the arc." (US Junior Nationals, May 2017)
