Sergio McClain is the only player to start on three consecutive
state championship teams and was the leading scorer in the state tournament.
He is the son of Manual coach Wayne McClain and first-team all-stater.
Sergio displays the leadership and the will to win that is reminiscent
of Quinn Buckner. The ability to play a variety of positions is one of the
strengths of the Mr. Basketball hopeful, along with a good outside shot,
smooth moves, and a build to post up his opponents.
McClain averaged 17ppg his junior year, 14ppg his sophomore year,
and 10ppg as a freshman. He has started every year of his high school
career.
Sergio is an academic qualifier, scoring a 19 on the ACT and
carrying a 3.5 GPA.
11-13-96...Sergio McClain has verballed to the University of
Illinois.
10-09-96...The rumor mill continues to spin out goodies about
the possible expanded package deal of Sergio McClain, his father Wayne,
and Marcus Griffin. Local rumors around Peoria point to Bradley being
a possibility for the three, as Bradley has asked Wayne McClain to come
on board before. Griffin has made favorable comments about Bradley
before. Also, Illinois' Kruger is not happy with the recent cancellation
of a visit from McClain and Griffin. The pair said the visit conflicted
with Peoria Manual's homecoming.
10-1-96...It now may be as late as the April signing period before
we know where Sergio McClain will play college ball. The Chicago Sun-
Times has reported that Manual coach Wayne McClain would like to have
Sergio on his team, if he is brought on board at a Division I college.
The article also stated McClain "is leaning to Indiana".
9-3-96...Sergio McClain has now made two visits to Bloomington
and has scheduled a home visit during the NCAA visitation period this
month with Coach Knight and Coach Kruger. Sources say the race is down
to Indiana and Illinois and he will likely commit before Griffin, who
is awaiting grades to take official visits.
8-10-96...The package deal of McClain and Marcus Griffin looks to
give a school two players that can fill any of the standard 5 positions.
While Griffin can play a little center and forward, McClain can play both
guard positions and play at small forward. "I'm not the kind of player who
is going to get stuck at one position," said McClain. "I can do a lot of
things and I am looking for a school that will let me do that." He has
taken unofficial visits already to Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern and Indiana.
Although he doesn't list any favorite among his the list he is considering,
the school that can take both he and Griffin will move to the top of the
list. "I am looking at those schools that will take both of us," McClain
said. "That could play a big role in my decision." A choice will be made
under the watchful eye of his father. "You have to go with situations some
time," said McClain's father and coach Wayne McClain. "They have been
together so long they have so much cohesion, that is what they would like
to do. When it gets down to it, we are just going to have to look at the
situation and decide what is best for both of them."
8-02-96...McClain attended ABCD and was ranked as a "player to
watch". His traveling AAU team, the Illinois Warriors, took the title at
the Adidas Big Time tournament in Las Vegas in late July. The Warriors won
the "A" division crown last year, and added an "Open" division crown this
year. 100 teams entered the six day competition and performed for over 200
coaches. The team's success going up against quality competition opened many
eyes, and confirmed both McClain's and teammate Marcus Griffin's status among
the top players in the nation. "Everyone knew they could play," said Warriors
coach Larry Butler. "Marcus and Sergio came down here with big reputations
and winning the title just put the stamp on them."
The Warriors defeated defending champion New Orleans 65-63 in the
semifinals to advance to the championship game to face the Michigan
Mustangs. McClain struggled from the field only scoring 7 points, but
finished with 8 assists. "I was struggling trying to score, so I had to
do something to help the team," said McClain. "I was just looking to
penetrate, find the open man and dish it." The Warriors defeated the
Mustangs 76-69 in the finals. McClain was rated the 5th best small
forward at ABCD, with a final ranking of 21st.
McClain and teammate Marcus Griffin continue to look at schools.
"Right now, it's wide open where we're going to go," said McClain. "We'd
like to go together as a package. Purdue is interested. So are Indiana,
Michigan, UCLA, USC and Illinois." Prep Stars believes that Illinois,
Purdue, and Michigan lead for the two, in that order. Both players have
expressed an interest in playing with Mike Robinson.
7-2-96...Hardwood Happenings has Iowa leading Illinois, Northwestern,
Michigan, and Bradley for McClain's services. Also, McClain's dad is
reportedly a candidate for the assistant coaching vacancy at Bradley.
4-26-96...It was reported in the Sun-Times that McClain is deciding
between Indiana and Illinois. No quotes or sources were given for this
info.
