Tony Mayfield comes top Purdue by way of Tyler Junior College.
Originally from Milwaukee, Mayfield played for King High School. Now on
strong academic footing, Mayfield transfers to Purdue with two years
of eligibility and the defensive skills not only to put pressure on
Alan Eldridge in practice, but also to compete for the a starting spot
at the point. Mayfield is a great defensive point guard and floor leader.
Offensively, he looks to pass more than he looks to shoot which should
gain him quick friends with the young scorers currently on the Boiler
squad. Mayfield averaged 12 points and 8 assists per game for a
Tyler Texas team that sent four players and a coach to Division I schools
his sophomore season there.
9-11-97...Tony Mayfield has successfully completed his junior
college requirements and has enrolled and arrived on the West Lafayette
campus. Due to the replacement of the Mackey Arena floor, he has been
participating in pickup games with team members in Lambert and the
Intercollegiate Athletic facility.
6-8-97...Tyler junior college had four players go on to
Division I universities this season. Coach Rike also jumped the Division I
train, landing at the University of Memphis as an assistant taking Tyler
power forward Jermaine Ousley with him. But looking at the team's
20-10 record, you would never know it. Never would have guessed it might
happen. "Individually we had a pretty good season, but we had a lot of
problems as a team," said Rike. "We had a lot of injuries and academic
problems." Academics were not a problem for Tony Mayfield. To be able to
appreciate the hard work, you have to understand a little of the background.
See, Tony Mayfield did not graduate high school.
If you attend summer AAU camps you will run into a club from
Wisconsin called "Stay In The Game". Tony Mayfield is a "Stay In The Game"
success story. The organization, run by volunteers under the guidance of
Curtis Weathers, has one main goal...to help players get a college
education. The program can boast 80 placements in schools over the past
three years. The program works by connecting players with colleges,
while also tutoring kids to take standardized tests. When Tony Mayfield
went looking for help, he was outside of the Milwaukee public school
system without a diploma. Tony was tutored, received his GED and was
connected with Coach Rike at Tyler JC. "We were able to find him a junior
where he was able to enroll and excel at and then, from there, helped him
on his way," said Weathers. "Tony is an excellent example."
To qualify to play at Purdue, Tony just needs to complete his
coursework this summer.
4-27-97...If Tony Mayfield plays as well against college guards
as he did against the North All-Star guards, we could have our new
starting point guard. Mayfield is excellent defensively, intense and
"in your face" kind of defense. He possesses quickness which helps to
harrass the opposing point guard. Although not quite as quick in this
game as Randal El (IU bound) he recovered nicely when beat, and knows
enough defensively to steer his man into help situations. The most
obvious skill exhibited on Sunday was his knack for making good
passes. The passing wasn't real showy, but very effective and crisp.
He is a guard that looks to pass before shoot. Offensively he can
improve his perimeter shot (0-1) but is a good slasher and rebounds
very well. Mayfield also shot 8 of 25 in the three-point contest,
finishing last. Unofficially (according to my own recordkeeping) he
finished with 8 points shooting 4-10 from the field, 0-2 from the
perimeter, 5 assists (3 first half), 4 steals (2 first half), 5
defensive rebounds and 3 offensive rebounds for a total of 8, and
5 fouls. One stat that is bound to make Coach Keady happy is his
5:1 turnover ratio. Mayfield's team won 103-93, thanks a lot to the
great play of all the guards and the inside intensity of Shabazz
(going to Florida State).
In an interview during halftime, Mayfield sounds like he
knows his role well. "I'm the general," Mayfield said. "I just like
to get the team going." His main goal..."getting the shooters the
ball."
4-24-97...Cam Stephens and incoming juco guard Tony Mayfield
are scheduled to play in this years Tim Knight Coca-Cola All Star
games this Sunday, April 27th. Joining the two Purdue recruits will
be a host of other incoming college players from Northwestern,
Notre Dame and Indiana. The Coca-Cola All-American game will be at
2:00pm followed by the Coca-Cola Reebok All-American game at 4:00pm,
both held at Joyce Arena on the campus of Notre Dame. The games
will be televised locally on WTTV4 out of Indianapolis. Tickets
can be purchased through Ticketmaster, or by calling the Joyce
Center box office at (219) 631-7356.
4-11-97...Chauncey Jones turned down the Boilers on Wednesday, and
Tony Mayfield didn't waste any time deciding where he wanted to go. For
more details check out this article from the Journal and Courier
(Jeff Washburn).
4-10-97...Rumors had Purdue looking at recruits from Tyler JC in
Texas, but who knew they were looking at a point guard and not one of
the team's nationally heralded post players? Point guard Tony Mayfield
visited the campus of Purdue on April 4-6 and followed with a verbal on
April 9th. Here are a few articles on Tony Mayfield from the Purdue Exponent
(Brian Neubert) and Indianapolis Star (Doug Griffiths).
