John Hamilton Jr. is the son of Greenfield Central head
coach John Sr. Hamilton is best known for his perimeter shooting,
a shot he can nail quickly off screens. Hamilton hit 50 from the
perimeter his freshman year on varsity. He has a great combination
of shooting guard skills. He can pour in the points, can create his
own shot with ease and runs the floor intelligently. Has the hops
to dunk, and adds a great all around game. Defensively needs work in
containing his man without help, but is benefitted by some quick
hands that gets him a few steals. Will be one of the state's top
scorers each year during his high school career.
During his junior year, John became Greenfield-Central's
all-time leading scorer, and he still has a season to further
redefine that new record. Hamilton was the state's #2 junior scorer
with a 27.0 point average, finishing as the state's #5 scorer
among all grades and classes. While improving his field goal
percentage to just over 53-percent, his perimeter average continued
to come down to earth (.333) from his incredible freshman percentage
of 45-percent. Greenfield-Central finished the season 15-6, losing
in sectional play.
John's sophomore year lifted him from the ranks of a great
shooter to a great scorer. He finished the season as the #12 scorer
in Indiana, averaging 24.5 ppg with a game high of 43 points. He
threw up a lot of shots, but hit .567 from the floor and .404 from
the perimeter. John also added 6.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.8
steals per game for the 20-4 Cougars who captured the Sectional
championship. The Cougars season ended at the hands of eventual
Class 3A champions Cathedral in regional play. John also set school
records for most points in a season (571) and highest per game
average in a season.
His freshman year, John averaged 16 points, 4 rebounds and
4 assists for a 12-9 squad. He hit over 50 shots from the perimeter
at around a 45% average.
10-23-99...It didn't take John long to find a home for himself
after deciding against coming to Purdue. Hamilton committed to Weber
State this week. We wish John the best of luck playing away from home,
but on a team with a surprising number of players from the state of
Indiana. He shouldn't have trouble getting rides back to Indiana for
the holidays.
10-19-88...In an article in the Journal and Courier on Monday,
John Hamilton said he was no longer considering the Boilers and has
informed the coaching staff. "I told him I wasn't going to go to Purdue,"
said Hamilton to J&C senior sports writer Jeff Washburn, "and that I was
looking at Weber State pretty hard." John also denied Keady gave him an
ultimatum, prep school or no offer. Hamilton said Keady did discuss the
prep school option, and was set to honor the scholarship offer if John
still wanted to come.
9-24-99...Joe Paxton, who runs the Greenfield-Central website,
tells us Hamilton is taking his official visit to Purdue this very weekend.
He was on campus today playing a little pickup basketball with the team,
and plans to do some of the same tomorrow. Joe's already got a GC season
preview up over on his site, which is worth checking out.
6-25-99...The Indiana Senior Stars swept the 1999 series with the
Junior All-Stars on Wednesday with a 130-117 victory. John had a better
offensive game this time around with 10 points. Hamilton also tied
Buscher and Parkinson for a team high 3 steals. (stats below)
6-18-99...Having a cold night from the floor taking shots from
inside and outside the arc, John contributed just one freethrow in the
scoring column, but dished out 4 assists (2nd on the team) and made only
one turnover. Six of his eight attempts were mid-range shots along with
one perimeter attempt and one shot in the paint. The Seniors beat the
Junior All-Stars 127-112, in the first of two scrimmages to be held in the
next week. The next game comes on the 23rd at Connersville High. (stats below)
6-5-99...I recently spoke with Bloomington Red head coach Bob Pryor
about the John Hamilton situation. "Although playing time was an issue,
John's abilities and attitude never were," said Pryor. "John is a great kid
and an excellent player." Coach Pryor added that John wasn't in the rotation
this past weekend, but that could have changed the next weekend (Bloomington
Red will be in Cleveland this weekend). Many current and former Purdue
players have at one time played for Bloomington Red, including Glenn
Robinson, Jamaal Davis and Maynard Lewis. John will be busy over the next
couple of months anyway with camp and all-star committments, including
practicing and playing on the Indiana Junior All-Star team.
6-3-99...John Hamilton has dropped off the Bloomington Red AAU team
according to a member of the Red coaching staff. The main issue was playing
time on a team with an overabundance of guards. Hamilton reportedly got little
playing time this past weekend as Bloomington Red won the Nike Bluegrass
tournament in Kentucky. Stay tuned for where he might land, as he searches
for another team.
5-11-99...USA TODAY named John to their All-USA honorable mention
team.
4-29-99...Hamilton will be playing this weekend for Bloomington Red
AAU at the Spiece tournament at Purdue. He will be playing on the same team
with several other Purdue prospects including Austin Parkinson, Sean Kline,
Chris Thomas and others. Following is a list of Bloomington Red's games during
pool play.
FRI 8:30pm vs. Columbus Basketball Club (Co-Rec #14)
SAT 9:30am vs. Team Kansas Strykers (Co-Rec #13)
SAT 2:00pm vs. The Challenge (Co-Rec #14)
4-22-99...An article in the Indianapolis Star has Purdue at the
top of John Hamilton's list. Hamilton is also being recruited by Notre
Dame, Indiana, Ball State, Syracuse and Louisville. His father expects
him to verbal (most likely to Purdue) at the end of the summer and sign
during the early period.
3-27-99...For a wrapup of John's junior season, check out the
"Player Summary" above. His final 98-99 season statistics are also listed
below.
2-22-99...John Hamilton has moved into the lead as Greenfield-
Central's all-time leading scorer, in just his junior year of competition.
John is also on target to break the school career mark for assists (needs
28 more).
1-30-99...After a 16 point performance Friday evening against
Pndleton Heights, John Hamilton now needs 65 points to become Greenfield-
Central's all-time leading scorer.
1-23-99...A scouting report from Greenfield-Central's 78-77 win
over Mt Vernon, a game rescheduled from January 8th...
"Hamilton scored 22 of his 34 points in the first half. He hit 5 of first 6
3-pointers. I'd say 4 of the five were near NBA range that he hit. Missed
some late FT's in the game, which is not normal for John. John's steal was
on Mt. Vernon's final possession with GC winning by one, which sealed the
victory for the Cougars. By far, John's best shooting performance this
season. He looked very comfortable and in the flow the entire game. MV
couldn't find anyone to stop him." (scouting report by Joe Paxton)
Through 12 games (January 16), John is currently the
state's #6 scorer (all classes) with a 26.5 average. Hamilton leads
all Indy metro scorers, just in front of Chris Thomas (#7 in the state).
His season high of 36 came in December against Muncie Central.
12-6-98...Tied at 60 with Warren Central, Hamilton hit the
go ahead three with five seconds remaining to give Greenfield-Central
the 63-60 win. (stats below)
12-5-98...Hamilton still remains the priority at shooting guard
in the Class of 2000. The race currently is down to Purdue, Kentucky
and Arizona, with LSU, Miami of Ohio and Ball State trailing.
11-14-98...Here's a look at the varsity roster for the 98-99
Greenfield Central boys squad...

Rob Deer 11 10 5'10
Ty Brown 10 12 5'8
Chase Low 10 14 5'11
Jared Manning 12 20 6'2

10-9-98...With Purdue still at the top of his list of choices,
John Hamilton will wait until the end of the season to make any type
of announcement. As this Purdue Exponent article indicates, Hamilton
will be yet another visitor for Mackey Magic this year.
7-4-98...A new article on Hamilton from the Indianapolis Star.
7-1-98...Peegs from the IU Basketball Recruiting Site attended the
Indiana AAU State Tournament last weekend, and has this scouting report on
John Hamilton.
6-27-98...Some more info on Hamilton, from both on and off the
court..."As a basketball player, he is very good. I've been impressed with
him in every game I've watched him play. He knows when he is hot and does
his best to get his teammates involved when he know he is not having the best
game. His teammmates call him a ball hog most of the time, but that's just
because he's that good. What probably impresses me more about him is his
qualities as a person. He will have NO problem qualifying academically. He's
a good student with an excellent approach to school first, basketball second.
Every teacher that I have talked to that has had John in class has been very
impressed." (report by annonymous)
5-25-98...A scouting report from Joe Paxton, who runs the
Greenfield-Central HS basketball page..."I have been going to open gym
at Greenfield-Central this summer to play. I've been playing with and
against Hamilton, and he is really improving. He is dunking the ball with
ease now. Nothing spectacular, but simple two handed dunks. And of course
he is shooting VERY well from beyond the arc. He is nearly unstoppable in
open gym. Even Chad Kerkhof has trouble defending him sometimes." (scouting
report by Joe Paxton)
5-1-98...One of the hot rumors after day one of the Spiece
Tournament at Purdue is the recent unofficial visit Hamilton made to
Notre Dame went very well.
1-17-98...Purdue and Indiana reportedly had representatives in
attendance for the January 16th Noblesville vs. Greenfield game. Purdue
is looking at 3A Greenfield sophomore guard John Hamilton, 6'3 son of
Greenfield head coach John Hamilton. The younger Hamilton hit for 43
points on 15-20 shooting in the double overtime win against Noblesville.
Hamilton is currently rated the state's #19 scorer at 23.5 ppg, and
averages .533 from the field, .753 from the line, and .333 from the
perimeter.
