Croatian-born Ivan (pronounced "ee-VAHN") Kartelo transferred to Purdue
following his sophomore season at Notre Dame in search of more playing time.
Originally from Split, Croatia where he was a two-year member of the
Croatian Junior National team, Kartelo enrolled at Winchendon Prep in
Massachusetts to place himself in a better position to attract a scholarship
offer to an American program. While at Winchendon, Kartelo was the top-ranked
academic student at the prep school.
His sophomore season at Notre Dame was cut short by a severe ankle sprain, limiting
his numbers to under a point per game, and cutting his playing time from 12 minutes
down to five. Notre Dame finished 20-10 on the season.
Kartelo averaged 2.5 points and 2.3 rebounds his first year of college ball at
Notre Dame. Getting a decent amount of playing time (13.2 minutes per game),
Kartelo shot a respectable 53-percent from the field and 47-percent from the line.
Before college, Kartelo played organized basketball for four years, participating
in the junior national program in Croatia for two of them. Kartelo prepped at
prep power Winchendon Academy, and led the team to a 30-6 record in 1998-99 averaging
13.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game. Before chosing Notre Dame, Ivan
had verbally committed to Rhode Island. When Jim Harrick was fired from Rhode Island,
Kartelo went looking. Georgia Tech, Massachusetts, Boston College, Kansas, and Rhode
Island all got strong consideration back in his prep career.
Sportsline analysis..."Big body with not a lot of developed skills. Extremely
raw but has potential. Too mechanical in his post movement. Likes the up and
under. A position rebounder, lacks jumping ability and relies on his considerable
reach." 8/24/00
Notre Dame Sports Information..."Hard-nosed center who is one of the team's
most improved players...adds bulk and size...good high-post player who can score
with his back to the basket...displayed a knack as a freshman on the offensive
glass...has a nice shooting touch from 15 feet and in...runs the floor well for
a player his size."
notre Dame practice observations from El Kabong..."Ivan seemed rather lethargic
this afternoon. He was matched up with Hump for most of the practice, and Hump's
play really seemed to frustrate the big Croatian -- one or two shoves over the
course of play, which Coach Brey squelched in short order. Ivan still has a sweet
shot from the top of the key, and he looks even more comfortable with it this
season. He's going to be very dangerous in the high post." 10/27/00
