CLASS OF: 2004
SCHOOL: Dodge City CC, KS
SCHOOL: Detroit Finney HS, MI
HEIGHT AND WEIGHT: 6'9, 220 lbs
POSITION: Center/Power Forward
02-03 RATINGS: No.7 JUCO center [RB]
STATUS: Verbal to Purdue 10/12/03
Gary Ware, a 6'8 220-pound post from Dodge City Community College in Dodge City (KS)
was one of the top freshmen in the Jayhawk Conference in 2002-2003. Ware was named
all-conference third team, averaging 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks per game.
Dodge City finished the 2002-2003 season 13-17.
Ware's wingspan is wide, and coupled with his jumping ability makes him an excellent
shotblocker. He's built like more of an athletic power forward who can play with his back
to the basket. Schools interested in Ware included Purdue, Colorado, Georgia, Houston,
Nebraska, Wyoming and New Mexico State. His official visits included Purdue, Nebraska,
Houston and Colorado, with all four placing scholarship offers on the table.
A native of Detroit (MI), Ware began playing organized basketball at Detroit Finney as
a sophomore. Ware was generally rated as a top 150 player by the time he was a senior.
Hoop Scoop listed him 42nd among power forwards in the Class of 2002, and he got a lot
of buzz as the best post player in Detroit his senior season. He averaged 10.3 points
for 21-5 Finney his senior year, losing in the quarterfinals of the 2002 Class A
tournament. Ware led his team in their final game with 11 points, but missed 9-of-12
freethrows. Finney lost the game by two points.
Ware averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds as a junior.
Gary has a younger brother who will be a junior in 2003-04 for Finney. Deon Ware is a 6'7
forward who is ranked as one of the top handful of player in the Michigan class of 2005.
Gary Ware verbally committed to Purdue on October 12, 2003.
Dodge City head coach Brian Hoberecht..."Gary is a very explosive athlete for
his size. With 30 more junior college games under his belt before he arrives at
Purdue, Gary is going to continue to mature and have a more polished game. He
will bring some versatility to the offense as a power forward. Defensively, with
his athleticism, he can make plays just because of his size." (Ocotber 14,
2003, Journal and Courier)
