HEIGHT AND WEIGHT: 6'5 193lbs
REACH AND WINGSPAN:
POSITION: Guard / Small Forward
00-01 RATINGS: #3 JUCO shooting guard (RB)
ACADEMICS: Yes
STATUS: Signed Purdue
Darmetreis Kilgore is rated as one of the top wing players among the Division I
junior college ranks, possessing a deadly inside-outside game that combines
a dead-eye perimeter shot and an explosive dunk. Kilgore gained his junior college
reputation playing in a conference with four other teams ranked among the top
25 in the country. He also managed the feat playing backup to Immanuel McElroy,
a player Purdue also looked at who committed last season to Cincinatti. Kilgore
hits almost equally as well from the floor (.470) as the perimeter (.412), and
is also an above average freethrow shooter (.670). He averaged 19 points per
game as a junior college freshman. Kilgore played his high school ball with South
Bend Washington, where he also averaged 19 points per game as a senior. Basically
flying under the recruiting radar most of his high school career, he did at one time
rise into the top 50 according to Hoop Scoop, but the lack of grades would send
him to a post-season ranking of 206.
4/8/01...Darmetreis Kilgore has popped up on some of the NJCAA statistical leader
boards in his final season. Kilgore's 187 rebounds, or 6.448 per game average,
ranks 42nd among Division I players. And his 21.414 points per game average is
ranked as the 12th best in Division I.
3/14/01...The Tyler Junior College Apaches ended the 2000-2001 season on Saturday
with a 97-83 loss to Trinity Valley in the Region 14 tournament. The Apaches were
in need of some consistency and immediate improvement on rebounding against a team
that beat them 88-79 a week ago. More importantly, Tyler needed to find a way to
replace the scoring punch of Darmetreis Kilgore, who did not start due to a case
of the flu. For a while it looked like Tyler would be able to build and maintain
a decent lead, but two crucial runs by TVC put TVC in the position to pull away
near the end of the game. TVC made 18 of 23 free throws in the second half, and
outrebounded Tyler 35-29. TVC was led by Jerome Holman with 32 points, including
huge threes when TVC needed a score. Tyler was led by Kilgore, managing 21 points
fighting the flu. Tyler finishes the season 14-17. Darmetreis Kilgore was named
to the Region 14 all-conference first team, and finished as the No. 2 scorer in
the conference.
2/2/01...Darmetreis Kilgore is rated by Brick Oettinger as the third best junior
college prospect in the article linked below. Of additional interest in the
article, Kilgore's teammate Bobbye Hill, a 6'9 sophomore center, is listing
Purdue. We did a quick sweep of the players on the Tyler JC team last summer to
see if anyone else on the squad was considering Purdue along with Kilgore. At
that time, Bobbye Hill was listing mostly mid-majors like Florida International,
East Carolina, Stephen F. Austin and Virginia Tech. Now, according to the
Oettinger article, Hill is listing Southern Mississippi, Virginia Tech and
Purdue. Another junior college sophomore on Oettinger's list is Barton
County's 6'7 forward Eric Washington, who lists Purdue, Houston, UAB,
Providence, Iowa and Michigan. Washington has recently stated Purdue is a
clear leader, but it is not known if he will be qualified at the end of this
year. Some lists have him as a freshman eligibility-wise. If he does wait to
come out until the 2001-2002 season, Purdue would have a scholarship to offer.
However, it does not look likely Purdue will add anyone to the current incoming
class of Carroll, Kilgore and McKnight.
2/1/01...Some updated stats for Darmetreis Kilgore through 16 games...20.1
points (.413 FG, .690 FT, .362 3PT), 6.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.6 steals
per game.
1/28/01...Tyler Junior College lost to Baytown Lee 80-71 at home Saturday.
Baton Rouge (LA) 6'0 freshman point Will Watson led TJC with 19 points,
including a three-quarter court bomb at the buzzer. Averaging 20 points per
game entering the game, Darmetreis Kilgore was held to 12 points, eight coming
from the free throw line.
1/8/01...The Tyler JC Apaches (6-9) won their second straight game Saturday,
led by Darmetreis Kilgore's 20 points. Kilgore hit 2-of-3 free throws, but it
was a team collective effort from the stripe that helped build a comfortable
lead through the second half. Tyler was down 13 points at one point in the first
half, then went on a 14-3 run at the end of the half to come within two points
of Lee College. Full court defensive pressure and a lack of depth took a severe
toll on Lee College. Tyler defeated Lee 90-75, hitting 18-of-21 free throws as
a team. Darmetreis Kilgore is now averaging 21 points and seven rebounds per
game this season for the Apaches.
12/28/01...On the topic of rankings, Purdue's most recent recruiting class of
Matt Carroll, Darmetreis Kilgore and Brandon McKnight has been rated the 35th
best class in the country according to Hoop Scoop. Clark Francis has the
junior college sophomore Darmetreis Kilgore as a top 40 player, McKnight
at No. 99, and Carroll in the top 200 to 300 range. A new ranking of the Big
Ten recruiting classes has Purdue with the conference's 6th best class. CNNSI
has Kilgore as the 4th best incoming player.
12/1/01...Darmetreis Kilgore was the only player in double figures for the
Tyler Apaches, scoring 26 points in a 78-62 loss to Paris Junior College on
Wednesday. Paris held Tyler as a team to just a hair above 30-percent shooting
from the field, and forced Tyler into 24 turnovers. Kilgore was on the floor
for 37 minutes of the game, hitting 9 of 22 field goals, 6 of 9 from the
perimeter and both of his freethrows. Kilgore led all scorers in the first
half with 17 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the perimeter. Kilgore also added
five boards, three assists and four steals, committing only one foul. Tyler
falls to 4-6 on the season.
11/29/01...Hutchinson JC focused on shutting down Tyler JC's top scorer,
Darmetreis Kilgore, frustrating him enough to run away with an 88-64 victory.
Kilgore finished with 23 points, but shot 7 of 22 from the floor and only
2 of 13 from the perimeter. Kilgore had 12 points in a 98-72 win over Hill
College the night before.
11/1/00...Jeff Washburn recently spoke to recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons about
Keady's incoming recruiting class of Kilgore, Carroll and McKnight. Gibbons believes
it is Keady's finest class since 1994, when Purdue brought in highly regarded Brad
Miller and Chad Austin, a sleeper named David Lesmond, and the nation's top junior
college player Roy Hairston.
10/30/00...Over the weekend, Darmetreis Kilgore made good on his "word" to Gene
Keady...he will play for the Boilers in 2001-2002. Kilgore, along side his family
for the weekend visit and scrimmage, finally ended the speculation and chose Purdue
over Kentucky. Kilgore will have two years of eligibility beginning in the 2001-2002
season, but may flirt with the NBA along the way. With verbal commitments from 6'8
forward Matt Carroll, 6'3 point guard Brandon McKnight, and now Kilgore, Purdue has
used all of the available scholarships for the class of 2001 and now turns to the
class of 2002. Purdue has up to five scholarships to use on that class.
10/26/00...Purdue has just one scholarship remaining, currently held out to 6'5 JUCO
winger Darmetreis Kilgore. Kilgore will visit Purdue this weekend. Wide speculation has
Kilgore in the mood to make a decision this weekend, which will help Purdue greatly by
allowing the staff to concentrate on the class of 2002. Purdue will have up to five
scholarships to offer the class of 2002.
10/18/00...Darmetreis Kilgore will officially visit Purdue the weekend of October 27-29.
According to his coach Matt Javit, Purdue is the clear frontrunner, maybe one of the only
schools in the running for Kilgore. Kilgore has previously mentioned giving his "word" to
the Purdue coaches, and no matter what high school site seems to think Purdue is
recruiting over him, Purdue has remained equally loyal.
10/5/00...Street & Smith has named Boiler prospect Darmetreis Kilgore a first team juco
all-american in this year's preseason preview.
9/28/00...Rick Ball, a recruiting analyst who covers the junior college circuit well, has Tyler
(TX) wing guard Darmetreis Kilgore rated the third best among juco wing guards. He also rates
former East Chicago forward Carlton Baker as the nation's fourth best small forward among
juco sophomores. Purdue needs a perimeter scorer from the class of 2001. Including JaQuan Hart,
who rates as the nation's fifth best shooting guard among high school seniors, Purdue is on
three top five players at their position.
9/21/00...Purdue continues the press on Tyler JC small forward Darmetreis Kilgore, as Cuonzo Martin is
seen visiting Tyler. Kilgore still has Purdue leading UNLV, Cincinnati and Illinois.
8/16/00...A wealth of junior college information in an article on the ESPN site, with mentions of
Keady, Darmetreis Kilgore, Sam Hoskin, former East Chicago forward Carlton Baker, and
former Lafayette Central Catholic forward Eric Washington. The guys from Recruiting USA
provide scouting on the players from last month's Jerry Mullen's All-Star Review. The camp
featured junior college players, and Gene Keady was said to be "paying special attention"
to his game. Keady has also been seen scouting Hoskins this summer.
6/2/00...Purdue received a visit this week from Tyler JC small forward Darmetreis Kilgore.
5/11/00...If the Purdue staff banks the remaining scholarships for this spring without
signing a wing scorer, Darmetreis Kilgore will remain an option for a scholarship in
2001. Kilgore finished as the sixth best scorer in NJCAA Region 14 in his first year of play
for Tyler J.C., averaging 18.4 points on 47-percent shooting from the floor and 67-percent
from the line.
4/3/00...Purdue is in good shape with Tyler Junior College 6-foot-5 freshman Darmetreis Kilgore,
who names Purdue as an early choice in this South Bend Tribune article... [South Bend Tribune]
3/6/00...Tyler J.C. moves on to the Region XIV semifinals with a 89-81 win over Jacksonville J.C.
Immanuel McElroy had a game-high 25 points. Also interesting to note is that former
South Bend Washington HS standout Darmetreis Kilgore had 15 points in the win for
Tyler. [JuCo Junction]
Tyler head coach Chris Crutchfield..."DK is one of the top shooters to ever come
through here. We expect a lot from Darmetreis. He is a player on the lines of
Rob Turner or Immanuel McElroy." Tyler Morning Telegraph
Junior college scout Jerry Mullin..."Has a great body ... athletic, a 2-3 swingman ...
shoots it well ... Kilgore can put it on the floor and take it to the basket ... shoots
with good range ... another big-time prospect." ESPN
