A quick, slashing guard who creates havoc for defenses by effectively being able to crash into the lane, and
float by defenders for what often turn out to be easy baskets. Her skill at hitting seams and splitting the defense
is advanced beyond most of her peers, which has led to rankings among the top 10 players in the nation. Exceptional
leaper, and whether on the drive or under the basket rebounding, has that entra hangtime that allows her to average
double-doubles in points and rebounds. The comparisons to Shereka Wright's slashing style (see scouting reports
below) is accurate, but can get a little streaky on freethrows. Whether she is an all-american like Shereka will
depend on how well her outside game catches up to her inside game.
As a junior, Jernigan led East Chicago to a 21-4 record, averaging 18.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game in just
over 18 minutes per game. While her perimeter shooting percentage is at .370, she doesn't take many of them. She
also averaged 4.3 assists and 2.8 steals per game.
Dee Dee Jernigan verbally committed to Purdue on 10/14/05 over DePaul and Rutgers, but was also being recruited
by Tennessee, Arizona, LSU and Ohio State. She signed with Purdue during the early signing period in November of
2005.
Purdue head coach Kristy Curry..."Dee Dee is an explosive, versatile athlete who can play anywhere on the
perimeter. She has tremendous quickness and the ability to break down a defense off the dribble and get to
the rim. She can score in so many different ways, and she also is a great defender and rebounder. She and
FahKara complement each other well and should make a special backcourt." (November 14, 2005)
Scouting report from the 2005 USJN Premier by Capri Small..."Amazingly fast slasher. I can see why everyone
wants her. Great athlete. She reminds me of Shereka in that her outside shot is quite ackward and the few she
attempted didn't go down. At this level she gets to the hoop so well it isn't hurting her. But to excel in
college she'll need to work on her jump shot." (July 12, 2005)
Scouting report from the 2005 McDonalds Shootout by Purdue Jim..."The best high school junior at the shootout
was D.D. Jernigan from East Chicago, Indiana. She is a very special player who reminds me of Shereka Wright. D.D.
is very similar in stature (5'10 and slender build) as Shereka and is fearless. She is probably a better
ballhandler and outside shooter than Shereka was, but doesn't have quite the same ability to draw fouls and get
to the free throw line." (January 25, 2005)
