9-30-01...The University of Michigan has received two commitments from big men
over the weekend. Chris Hunter, a 6'11 post player from Gary West, and
Amadoue Ba, a 6'10 center from Bridgeton Prep (ME), have given the Wolverines
verbal commitments. Amadoue Ba is a raw, 240-pound center who has only been
playing organized ball for a few years. Hunter should develop into a great
player, and it will be nice to watch the transformation from within the
conference.
8-22-01...Tis the season for recruiters and scouts to release their post-summer
rankings, and we have a few new lists out to look at. The Sporting News has
added their top 51-100 prospects to the previously released listed top 50.
Names of interest in the second 50 are Matt Keifer at #84 and Chris Hunter
at #92.
8-9-01...An on again, off again relationship with Purdue? The latest list
mentioned by Gary West's Chris Hunter doesn't mention Purdue. But we've seen
Purdue left off the list before, only to pop up on his list a few days later
on another site. Illinois, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Ohio State, Michigan State
and Seton Hall are mentioned this time, and the article says academics aren't
a concern anymore.
6-22-01...There has been an update recently from Prep Stars on Chris Hunter
(July 18 update). Hunter says he hasn't been extended any scholarship offers, but
won't look to narrow his list until July. He still sees himself as playing the
three or four positions in college.
6-22-01...Gary Westside coach John Boyd states Chris Hunter will make an unofficial
visit to Michigan this weekend, and might be considering a package deal with
Brandon Cameron. However, only two schools seem to appear on both players' lists.
Boyd mentions Hunter involved with Purdue, North Carolina, Penn State, Georgia Tech,
Illinois and Michigan State, while Cameron is interested in Penn State, Marquette,
Louisville, Princeton, and Michigan.
6-4-01...More evaluations from the Nike Memorial Day Tournament. This time, Roy and
Harv Schmidt give their impressions of Chris Hunter, Deuce Miller, Ricardo Billings,
Melvin Buckley, Delco Rowley and Brian Randle. MORE
5-22-01...Tobie Smith of the Wolverine spoke with Gary West head coach John Boyd and got
a list for Chris Hunter that includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Purdue, Michigan State,
Georgia Tech, and Missouri. Boyd said Hunter will take visits in June, and should be ready
to announce his decision in late July or August.
4-11-01...A Hoosier-centric article on Indiana's pursuit of Gary West junior
big man Chris Hunter. Reading the quotes from Hunter, it is obvious he is
playing it cool so far. [Inside IU]
2-23-01...Coach Keady was spotted at Thursday's Gary West Side vs. Gary Mann
game. West Side clinched a share of the Nortwestern Conference title in the
66-53 victory. Brandon Cameron scored 12 points and dished out seven assists,
while Chris Hunter finished with nine points and five rebounds.
1-28-01...A breakout game Friday night by Gary West's Chris Hunter. Hunter
hit for 31 points as the Cougars beat host East Chicago 68-58. Hunter was the
only West Side (11-3) player in double figures. The closest teammate was
Brandon Cameron with nine.
1-4-01...What a night for Kenneth Lowe to lead Purdue with 19 points in their
20 point win over Michigan. Sitting behind the bench and having a good time
were Lowe's high school teammates Chris Hunter and Brandon Cameron. Also
behind the bench was Indianapolis Pike's 6'5 sophomore forward Parnell
Smith.
12-9-00...Gary West Side (5-1) defeated Brett Buscher's alma mater on
Thursday behind the 15 points and four blocked shots of Chris Hunter and
13 points from Brandon Cameron.
11-27-00...With Brandon Cameron out with the flu, Gary Westside rode Chris
Hunter's 22 points, 8 boards and two game deciding defensive charge-receptions
to nip Lew Wallace 69-66. Westside is now 2-1 on the season.
11-25-00...Chris Hunter scored 12 points but only got seven shot attempts
against a pumped up Gary Roosevelt team last night. Roosevelt beat the Westside
Cougars 77-68. Brandon Cameron matched Hunter's output of 12 points, but was
4-15 from the floor.
11-20-00...A reminder that tickets go on sale today for the second annual
Region Roundball Rumble, an all day showcase featuring seven of the state's
top programs plus a team from Kentucky. Tickets can be purchased at participating
schools, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays at the Hammond Civic Center box office,
and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, beginning Monday afternoon, at Times offices
in Munster, Crown Point, Valparaiso and Portage. Tickets are $6 for the two-game
morning session, or $10 for the entire four-game day. The Times Region Roundball
Rumble will be held December 2nd at the Hammond Civic Center, Hammond, IN. The
Rumble will feature four games, beginning at 11am, 1pm, 6pm and 8pm. After a
late afternoon break, action begins again at 6pm with Gary Westside and Bullitt
Central (KY). West continues to schedule out-of-state competition, this time
bringing in a Kentucky team to the Rumble. The obvious two prospects to watch
at West are the much mentioned juniors Brandon Cameron and Chris Hunter, but
also watch for shooting guard Duane Cooper and a host of additional talent on
a packed roster.
11-12-00...Midwest Hoops recently talked to Hunter and got a list of schools that
includes Arizona, DePaul, Indiana, Notre Dame, UNC, Purdue, Ohio State, and Iowa.
7-26-00...2002 Gary West 6-foot-9 center Chris Hunter was named the 20th best
undeclassmen at the recently concluded Nike Peach Jam AAU tournament. Hunter's
team, Bloomington Red, finished the tournament with a 2-3 record.
3-11-00...Munster 70, Gary West 68 - Both Brandon Cameron and Chris Hunter fouled
out of their semifinal game against Munster, Hunter leaving with 6.5 seconds
remaining due to an offensive charge. Cameron had 17 points and a team-high three
steals before his early exit with the 6-foot-10 Hunter adding seven points and
seven rebounds.
3-4-00...Today's Times Online has a sectional preview for the Region teams,
including all-sectional honor teams. Gary West will play in the East Chicago
sectional, after a first round bye, on Friday at 7:30pm against Munster (16-4).
Named to the all-sectional team were West's Brandon Cameron and Chris Hunter.
Cameron, a 6'0 sophomore guard, is averaging 17.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.6
assists and shooting 48-percent from the perimeter. Hunter, a 6'10 sophomore
center, adds 15.2 points per game, 11.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.
12-30-99...Lew Wallace avenged an end of game shot on December 3rd that
came by way of the hot hands of Brandon Cameron in the finals of the
Gary Holiday Tournament hosted by Westside. Westside slowly narrowed
the Wallace lead throughout the game, but a 10-of-12 shooting performance
by Wallace from the freethrow line in the fourth quarter secured the win.
The game was within reach for the Cougars, if only they had converted on
a few of their 14 missed freethorws over the course of the game. (stats
below)
12-16-99...At Chicago, the Cougars (3-3) fell behind 46-36 at halftime
and couldn't recover against Manley (7-2). Douglas McKinney scored 17
to lead West Side. Donald Richards added 14 points, while Christopher
Hunter added 12 points and nine rebounds.
9-30-99...An unconfirmed report from the internet has Purdue watching not
only Gary Westside's Brandon Cameron, but also 6'9 center Chris Hunter.
Hunter has some work to do on fundamentals and could use to add to his
bulk, but does have some promise. There was a rumored visit to Iowa State
this fall, and Purdue and Indiana are also watching his progress.
Recruiter's Handbook..."Would be a high-major prospect if all he did was stand
there. The dude looks like a praying mantis. His arms and legs are impossibly long
and lanky. (And the kid's still growing!) The 6-11 (going on 7-2) C from Gary (IN)
West also showed superb athleticism and a willingness and ability to put the ball
on the floor and slash to the hoop from one of the blocks. Long strides cover
plenty of ground -- and quickly. A solid prospect now with an ENORMOUS upside for
the future." 4/10/01
Mike Pegram at the Nike Showcase..."Hunter was also a bit of a disappointment,
at least based on some of high rankings he has earned from national recruiting
gurus. He will remind you of Newton and Leach in the way you see great potential
but don't see the needed strength or fundamentals for the game. Terribly skinny
a year ago he looks better in the upper body but still has toothpicks for legs.
Despite all this he still as enormous potential. He is up to 6'10 now and has a
nose for blocking shots with his long reach. He can hit his free throws and
medium range jumpers. But finishing inside against strong players is not easy
for him right now." 4/1/01
Vince Baldwin of Midwest Hoops..."Long and lanky big man is very active and
quick off the floor. He runs the floor very well and showed good hands on
rebounds and on catching the ball in traffic. He is a major shot blocker who
is still developing his offensive game. He scored mostly on dunks & put backs.
He is not physically strong but is aggressive to the glass and will only get
better as he gets stronger." 12/28/01
