A year ago, scouts were describing 6'9 Brian Boddicker as thin
and lanky. Things would get worse before they would get better. What
was originally thought of as a hernia early in his junior season ended
up with Brian in the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. It wasn't
until January of his junior season when Boddicker began showing strength
again. An intense regimen of weights got him back into shape, and
stronger than ever. Now in the 220 to 230 pound range, he is able to
affect play in the paint instead of working around the play of others.
He has good footwork, is a good athlete, and has the work ethic to
expand his game. One area needing work is his perimeter game, as he is
pegged for the power forward spot in college. He has the range, but
needs more opportunity to hone the shot. His coach also points to his
better than average ball-handling skills for a post player. Seen at times
to suffer against more agile post players, Boddicker's post defense will
need time to develop to a college level. Regardless, he is a high
Division I prospect, listed among the top 70 players as a junior. Brian
was one of the players selected by USA basketball to play last summer
in their Developmental league.
Boddicker averaged 19.9 points and 9 rebounds as a junior after
spending half the season getting back into playing shape. Duncanville won
their last 23 games and went on to their second Class 5A state title of
the 90s (over Kimball, who has won three 5A titles in the 90s), and
Boddicker took home the tournament MVP honors. Duncanville finished ranked
11th in the nation by USA TODAY.
Boddicker is an honors student and has already achieved a qualifying
score on the SAT.
6-18-99...Two schools have pulled ahead of the rest in the race for
Boddicker. According to Insider's Report, Texas and TCU are leading, followed
by Texas A&M, SMU, Rice, Kentucky, UCLA, Stanford, Ohio State, Duke, Arizona,
Kansas, Iowa, Purdue and Baylor (in no particular order).
6-7-99...Boddicker recently told the Insider's Report that his updated
list still includes Purdue, along with Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, SMU, Rice,
Kentucky, UCLA, Stanford, Ohio State, Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Iowa and Baylor.
5-18-99...Russ Blake from the Insider's Report has got the early list
for 6'9 Texas junior post Brian Boddicker, and Purdue is getting some early
condieration. His early list includes Iowa, Ohio State, Purdue, Duke, Kansas,
Texas, Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, Kentucky and Texas Christian. A high school
teammate recently signed with Texas for the 99-00 season. The Duncanville
program is probably most famous for turning out big man Greg Ostertag, who
went on to be an all-american at Kansas and now plays in the NBA with the
Utah Jazz.
5-17-99...For a quick peek at Boddicker, check out this site for
some downloadable film footage. The footage is from the 5A state final win
over Kimball. The .avi file is good, but at 9597K, it takes a while to download.
Worth the wait for 36 seconds of good footage (with sound).
