Player Summary

Andy Slocum hails from West Monroe High, LA where he is a standout player in both baseball and basketball. Schools with strong baseball programs will likely have the upper hand in this recruiting race. The 6'11, 235-pound lefty has the frame to potentially be a great player in collegiate basketball too, let alone his status as a potential Major League Baseball player. He moves well, but isn't described by many as being an athlete. His post game lives on movement and with some strength and size he will be able to move post defenders more easily. His range extends past the perimeter, but is most effective in the paint with an effective jump hook. Slocum averaged 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots as a junior.

Current Player News

4-13-99...WLFI TV-18 reported this morning that they were hearing it was likely Slocum would announce this afternoon for Texas A&M. This afternoon, Slocum was an Aggie. 3-17-99...According to a new Insider's Report blurb, Slocum is still looking for a school to make his final official visit. A month ago it looked like Southern Cal was going to be the school to get it, but now Florida State has been mentioned as a possibility. He also would like to make some unofficial visits. The recent coaching change at Notre Dame has Notre Dame out of the running until a new coach is named. His list now includes Florida State, Auburn, Miami (FL), Penn State, Texas A&M, Tulane, Texas, Purdue, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Alabama, Southern California, and Utah. If Utah coach Rick Majerus is named the new coach of Notre Dame (as of 3/16 Majerus said he has not been contacted about the job), look for Notre Dame to become a strong contender. 2-27-99...Slocum and Derrick Zimmerman aren't strangers, and it isn't just because their high school teams occasionally play each other. The two player played for the same AAU team, the New Orleans Jazz, last summer for coach Thad Foucher. The roster included seniors 6'11 F/C Jonathan Bender, Picayune (Ms); 6'11 C Andy Slocum, West Monroe; 6'7 F Barry Carter, White Castle; 6'7 F Ron Dupree, Biloxi (MS); 6'7 F Thomas Davis, Pineville; 6'0 PG Hollis Price, New Orleans St. Augustine; 6'3 G/F Derek Zimmerman, Monroe Wossman; JR 6'1 PG Chris Duhon, Slidell and JR 6'3 G/F Jumichael Young, Hammond. 2-24-99...The Indy Star has an article on Slocum and Zimmerman, featuring some comments from the opposing coach on each player. 2-21-99...The list of schools in contact with Slocum include Villanova, Florida State, Auburn, Miami of Florida, Penn State, Texas A&M, Tulane, Texas, Villanova, Purdue, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Alabama, Southern California, Notre Dame, and Utah. While his coach has said Andy is unlikely to attend a west coast school, he has visited USC unofficially, and has another visit scheduled soon. 2-15-99...Slocum has set up his final official visit with Southern California. The maximum paid visits is five, so if he is interested in Purdue he will have to do it with his own money. Some conflicting information from a Notre Dame fan magazine states Slocum has already officially (paid visit) Southern California, along with Utah, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. 1-30-99...According to the Insider's Report, Slocum is getting attention from Penn State, Utah, Texas A&M, Tulane, Texas, Villanova, Purdue, Northwestern, Alabama, Southern California, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, and Utah. Tennessee and Utah are reportedly out of the running. 1-8-99...Assistant coach Jim Thrash took in the West Monroe vs Woosman game not only to check out Slocum, but also Woosman's 6'3 all-state guard Derrick Zimmerman. 12-27-98...Andy Slocum has been rated the 17th best center prospect in the senior class by FullCourt Magazine. 10-27-98...USC got an unofficial visit from 6'10 West Monroe center Andy Slocum this past weekend.
