2006-07 VBall Ratings
Presented by Old Gold Free Press
With Coach Sharon Versyp's first season at Purdue, the staff at Old Gold Free Press has compiled
a statistical measurement of what Coach Versyp expects from her players. Termed "VBall", the
rating measures the success of the team in reaching certain key goals the staff has set
for the players. The rating will be released following each game, giving fans a way to track
the progress of the team from game to game on fundamental team goals. For an explanation of just
what goes into the "VBall" score, reference the key at the bottom of the page.
Sharon Versyp and staff challenge their players to meet certain goals. These goals, if successfully
executed, will win you most games you play. The twelve main goals for the team are as follows...
Defense
1. Opponent shooting percentage less than 38 percent
2. Opponent three-point shooting percentage less than 30 percent
3. Opponent held under 55 points
4. Outrebound the opponent on total rebounds
5. Force the opponent to commit 15 or more turnovers
6. Purdue to have 10 or more steals
Offense
7. Purdue shooting percentage 48 percent or better
8. Purdue three-point shooting percentage 40 percent or better
9. Purdue freethrow shooting percentage 80 percent or better
10. Purdue to have 10 or more offensive rebounds
11. Purdue to commit fewer than 15 turnovers
12. Purdue to have 12 or more assists
Each of the twelve main goals listed above will each be scored a maximum of eight points. The
remaining four points will come from successfully achieving bonus points. The best game would score a
maximum of 100 in our rating system, even though a perfect execution could achieve a score of 103 points.
1. Opponent shooting percentage less than 38 percent...One rating point is subtracted for
every two percent over 38 percent.
2. Opponent three-point shooting percentage less than 30 percent...One rating point is subtracted
for every two percent over 30 percent.
3. Opponent held under 55 points...Loss of one rating point for every two points over 55
an opponent scores.
4. Outrebound the opponent on total rebounds...Loss of one rating point for every one rebound an
opponent outrebounds Purdue by.
5. Force the opponent to commit 15 or more turnovers...Loss of one rating point for every turnover
under 15 an opponent commits.
6. Purdue to have 10 or more steals...Loss of one rating point for every steal under ten.
7. Purdue shooting percentage 48 percent or better...Loss of one rating point for every two

BONUS POINTS On top of the 12 offensive and defensive key factors of success, we have identified eight
intangibles that can work as bonus points. They are as follows...
* Leadership point (LEA)...A goal of a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio for Purdue point guards.
If a point guard has a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio for a game, the team is awarded one
point.
* XX point (XX)...Purdue puts a lid on opposing players, and Coach Versyp has a goal of limiting opposing players
to 20 points or less. If no opposing player scores more than 20 points, the team is awarded one point.
* Stopper point (STP)...Purdue is defined by defense, and a key to successfully taking an opposing
team out of its gameplan is to shut down the opposing team's best scorer. If the opposing team's
best scorer is held under her season average, the team is awarded one point.
* Survivor point (SUR)...Purdue play tough, but they also play smart. A large number
of fouls are caused by a player trying to cover the defensive breakdown of another player.
If no Purdue player fouls out of a game, the team is awarded one point.
* Elimination point (ELI)...Purdue takes it hard to the opponent. If Purdue fouls out
an opposing player, the team is awarded one point.
* Hardship point (HAR)...Simply, Purdue wins most games it leads at the half. If Purdue
wins game after trailing at the half, the team is awarded one point.
* Pressure point (PRE)...Some games require a little extra focus to be successful. Big
games and hostile crowds are always an 'x' factor. If Purdue wins against arch-rival Indiana,
wins against a team ranked in the top 10, wins a Big Ten Championship clinching game, wins
a Big Ten tournament game or wins an NCAA tournament game, the team is awarded one point.
