I have read a few things on this board that tell me that some of you are misinformed.
I read that if Lymon would have listened to the position and strength coaches, maybe he would have got drafted. Not a single coach has ever made the claim that he didn't work hard in practice. I have participated in sports with him in Fort Wayne, and he was never mentioned as anything less then a great team player. People always point to a few incidences in his life and make him out to be a straight thug who is terrible for the team.
1. He was academically ineligible his freshman year. Do you know why? When he transfered from North Side High School to Harding High School after his sophomore year, he was transferring from a FWCS curriculum to an East Allen County school curriculum. Two of the classes he took at North Side were not recognized by harding, thus dropping his GPA. He turned down a state championship in Track his senior year to go to night school to try and fix the problem. He turned down a state record in the 400 meter dash to do that. At the end of the day, he was just on the wrong end of some unfortunate circumstances.
Lets move on, Lymon still enrolled at Purdue, and according to Greg Orton, he was a class act student his Freshman year. He went to class and didn't get into any trouble. He comes in to Sophomore year, and he is starting to see the field immediately. He has a blowup game against Notre Dame, and after that, event two happens.
2. He was shot in the eye with a paintball gun. After the game was over, he took his goggles off and was hit then. I had a friend in that game, he backs the story. Unfortunate, but airsoft pellets don't do any damage unless you are hit directly in the eye from close range. It is a safe game and you can buy guns at Walmart for 20 dollars.
He continues through the season, ends up with pretty solid numbers considering he is the 4th option to catch the ball. He gets into trouble during that offseason fight/ stabbing, comes back and plays sophomore year, and gets too drunk after the IU game and gets thrown off.
People always say he never contributed enough for his hype. Maybe he didn't, but honestly, he was the number 4 option! Dorien was the first guy we threw to. Then Dustin Keller, then orton, and then Lymon got what was left. What do you expect from a Sophomore who is the number 4 option?
He had a drinking problem, but he is of age now, and the NFL takes people with far less issues then he has. He is not a low character guy, and one day he will mature beyond the point of needing to get drunk all of the time. In his life, he has run an electronically timed 4.34 in the 40, 11.02 in the 100, and low 47 in the 400 dash. He is 6'4, he has hands, he can play the position. He will catch on somewhere before its all said and done. As for all of the ripping of him for going undrafted, what round did T-Stubblefield and Standeford go?
