Did it rain or what last Friday (9/29)?? Luckily, the game I chose was able to be completed. Most games in central Indiana got washed out.First...let me congratulate Carmel for slinging Goliath! Carmel upsets Warren Central? I couldn't believe it either. But, it goes to show you that sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Carmel was able to get a solid run game going and kept the WC offense off the field. The playoffs suddening got interesting thanks to Carmel.
I headed to Franklin Central. You know,...I forget what a powerhouse the Flashes were in the 80's. They were as dominate a team as you'd find for a 10 year stretch. State Champs: 1980, 1981, 1982, 1990 State Runner Ups: 1986, 1988, 1989. Pretty impressive! They're now being coaching by Lance Scheib. (a WR letterman for the Boilers from 1985-1988) Lance caught TD passes from Jeffy George while Warren Central was winning state titles in the mid 80's) Lance also coached Craig Terrill at Lebanon before coming to breathe life back into Franklin Central.
This game stayed dry for the most part. The locals were NOT happy with Coach Scheib. Even I questioned what I saw. Columbus North wins the game 20-19, but get this: with the score 20-7 (advantage CN), Franklin scores a TD. That makes it 20-13. Instead of going for the kick PAT, he goes for 2 after a CN penalty moves it closer to the goaline. 20-14 would be ideal, but they go for 2 and don't make it. Then, at the end of the game, FC scores again making it 20-19. They decide to go for the win and 2 and don't make it. OUCH! Maybe the drizzle made for "no confidence in the kicker" is the only explanation I could come up with. After the last play, the rain came in sheets.
DONALD WASHINGTON, WR/DB (6-2, 185 lbs., Jr.) Franklin Central H.S. - Donald is being tabbed by some as one of the top juniors in the state for the class of 2005. I don't think I saw his finest game. (I hope not anyway) He muffed (and lost) a punt. On several deep balls, the corner just simply went up and caught the ball in front of him. (happened twice for 2 interceptions) Coach Scheib was NOT pleased to say the least. He was in Donald's face demanding AGGRESSIVENESS. I sat pretty high up, but I could hear the word aggressive over and over again. Afterall, it was a tight game. Help your QB! Make a play. Make an attempt. Sometimes a WR must become a DB. Don't be a spectator. Like I said, probably not his best game. The rain didn't help either. Physically, he looked to have all of the tools....but most of the tools got left in the toolbox. Its really hard to evaluate a player by simply watching one game.
