In an effort to further promote the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Think Pink" initiative, the pink uniforms worn by the Purdue women's basketball team last month will be auctioned at the Feb. 14 home game against Iowa. The Valentine's Day game falls during the official "Think Pink" week, and all proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The women's basketball team's "Think Pink" event on Sunday, Jan. 27 was a big success. Not only did the Boilermakers defeat Illinois 71-59 to remain at the top of the Big Ten standings, more than $2,000 was raised for the fight against breast cancer. The majority of fans in attendance wore pink, and the cancer survivors that were recognized on Keady Court at halftime received a standing ovation.
The silent auction of 14 pink uniforms will begin when the doors open at 6 p.m. and will conclude at the start of the second half of the game. Thirteen of the uniforms will be autographed by players and the 14th uniform, which was not worn in the "Think Pink" game, will be autographed by the coaching staff.
John Purdue Club members who are interested in bidding on a uniform but are unable to attend the game, may place an advance bid by contacting the JPC office at 765-494-3248. All advance bids must be received by 5 p.m. ET on Feb. 13.
The uniforms were not originally planned for auction in the event that they would be worn at Michigan State on Feb. 11. That game, which will be broadcast by the Big Ten Network, is the Spartan's "Think Pink" game. At Michigan State's request, the Boilermakers will not wear pink uniforms but will wear the pink Purdue t-shirts as shooting shirts in support of the cause.
The Valentine's Day game against Iowa falls during the official "Think Pink" week. Purdue chose to hold its "Think Pink" event early in order to take advantage of the increased attendance from a weekend game. All proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Only cash or check payments will be accepted, and payment is due on Feb. 14.
