Another Mississippi State visitor identifiedAnother player in attendance for Saturday's game against Mississippi State was Wisconsin forward Val Schuster. The 6'1 junior from Wausau, Wis., averaged 13.0 points and 6.4 rebounds as a sophomore. She traveled this past summer with Team Wisconsin AAU and played in the Battle of the Programs in Schaumburg, Ill. on The Viking Club team.
Wausau Newman high school went to the Division IV final game last year, and is off to a 7-0 record so far this season and ranked No. 1 by the Associated Press.
Hall of Fame Classic
The Hall of Fame Classic again has a game practically irresistible to Purdue fans, as Class 4A South Bend Washington (9-1) will face Class 2A Heritage Christian (8-1) in the opening round of the one-day tournament in New Castle, Ind.
The tournament will begin at 10:00am on Thursday, December 28th with Franklin Central taking on host New Castle, followed by the 11:30am matchup of Washington and Hertage Christian. The losers in the morning games will play in the consolation game at 6:00pm, followed by the winners in the championship game at 7:30pm.
As of the December 18th ICGSA high school poll, South Bend Washington currently rests at No. 3 in Class 4A, while fellow 4A member Frankling Central is unranked with a record of 5-4. Two of Franklin Central's four losses were single-possession losses to 3A power Brebeuf. New Castle has an unblemished record at 8-0 and ranks No. 2 in Class 3A. Heritage Christian is currently No. 1 in Class 2A.
Purdue assistant coach Nadine Morgan gets the Road Warrior Award, as she is rumored to be the Purdue coach trying to catch the game in New Castle and return in time for the 7:00pm tipoff against Michigan in Mackey later that evening.
Rayburn still leads area
New statistics show Brittany Rayburn leading the Lafayette area in scoring and rebounding, tied for 13th in assists, second in steals and freethrow accuracy. Rayburn is averaging 28.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 82.1-percent from the freethrow line. Attica, ranked 12th in Class A in the latest ICGSA poll, leads the area in team defense, allowing only 37.6 points per game.
