We finally got a chance to catch up with Dee Dee Jernigan today to set the record straight about her status with Kristy Curry and the Purdue program. It was not the only school supposedly to have received a commitment from her recently, according to the growing lore surrounding East Chicago's newest basketball celebrity. Jernigan's answer to those who thought she made a commitment recently, to any school -- a firm "No."
Over the past two weeks, we have heard some very specific rumors posted to various internet sites regarding commitments to the Purdue program. The first regarding Sharon Houston, and the latest making circles outside the internet, involved East Chicago's Dee Dee Jernigan. The players from one of the summer's most successful AAU programs are now the focus of recruiters, media outlets, and hopeful fans.
Dee Dee Jernigan called the new attention "crazy", indicated it was a new experience to her following the summer evaluation periods. Her position as a national top ten recruit and a slashing, defensive nightmare on the national champs The Family has her answering the phone much more these days, and not just because coaches can now call her as allowed by the NCAA.
"I got a call today from two players," said Jernigan, players from a team on her list checking in to see what all the buzz was about.
In an effort to help clarify some of the information regarding her recruitment, Jernigan indicated having no plans to visit Illinois. She has set up one home visit so far for this fall, and that is with Purdue. She also indicated distance from home was not a concern for her in her decisionmaking process.
And as a last opportunity to address fans following her recruitment, Jernigan added the following words of advice ...
"Don't believe everything you hear."
