Beat me once, shame on you. Beat me twice, shame on me.
Beat me three times -- not this year.
Arthur Hill, who had downed Saginaw Heritage 57-44 and 60-48 during the regular season, went into the Class A state tournament this past week the heavy favorite. But familiarity would ultimately be Arthur Hill's downfall. Heritage spent four straight practices learning to beat Arthur Hill. That focus paid off, with a 44-28 blowout of the No. 3 Lumberjacks in the first round of the Michigan Class A tournament.
Arthur Hill was held to only 11 first half points, and despite a second half burst of scoring by Freeman, they could get no closer than eight points. Freeman opened the third quarter with six straight points, finishing with a team-high 11. She also added six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Heritage was led by junior forward Jamie Schiebner with 12, who drew Freeman as her defensive assignment. Heritage went on to win the District title on Friday, and now moves on to face No. 1 Flint Northern on Monday.
