Saginaw Arthur Hill moves to 16-1
The Associated Press Michigan Class A girls basketball poll continues to remain the same at the top, with Saginaw Arthur Hill locked into No. 3 behind No. 2 Detroit King and No. 1 Flint Northern. Arthur Hill did move within two points of King in the voting, slapping a second victory this season on current No. 9 Saginaw Heritage.
Lakisha Freeman led Arthur Hill to a 60-48 win over Heritage, scoring 15 points and grabbing eight boards. Arthur Hill defeated Heritage earlier in the season by a similar score of 57-44. The two teams will get one final crack at each other when they play in the first game of the upcoming district playoffs on November 18th.
Arthur Hill posted another victory this past week, a 69-39 home court schooling of Saginaw High.
With the district playoff bracket being finalized, it is hard not to look ahead and see the difficult path Arthur Hill has to travel. If Arthur Hill survives the third matchup with Class A No. 9 Heritage in the district playoffs, they have a first round game with Class A No. 1 Flint Northern to start regional play. Flint Northern is the only team to have beaten Arthur Hill this season. Beating the No. 1 team does not allow them much time to celebrate, as the next game will likely be against undefeated Traverse City West, or 14-2 Traverse City Central. Regional action begins on November 24th, with the quarterfinals on December 2nd and the Class A semifinals beginning on December 4th. The state championship will be held at Central Michigan University's Rose Arena, which is a five hour drive from Lafayette.
Ward's coach pushed Purdue
Despite her AAU coach pushing her elsewhere, Danielle Ward's high school coach Alina Cunningham had her support behind another program. From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel...
King coach Alina Cunningham said she made a pitch for Purdue, but then backed Ward's decision once she saw Ward's enthusiasm for Wisconsin.
Cunningham graduated from Milwaukee's Bradley Tech in 1989. She played collegiately at Bethany Lutheran College in Minnesota and Marycrest College in Iowa.
Ward picked Wisconsin last Friday over scholarship offers from Purdue, Marquette, Kentucky, Iowa, and Minnesota.
