Among the potential recruits in attendance for this afternoon's Ohio State game was junior forward Simone Jelks of Brush High in Lyndhurst, OH.Jelks, a 5'11 145-pound guard/forward, is averaging 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, five steals and three blocked shots for Brush. But her scoring average is on the rise. Jelks has averaged 25 points in her last two games.
In a 55-49 victory over Mayfield, Jelks scored 25 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished six assists. She followed up that performance with a 25 point and 12 rebound game against Kenston. In that 61-30 victory, Jelks added five steals and two blocked shots.
As a sophomore, Jelks was named all-Ohio Division I special mention by the Associated Press. She was named honorable mention all-northern Ohio by the Sun News, and added first team all-conference and all-district honors to her growing list of accomplishments.
The honors do not stop at basketball. Brush High added girls golf in 2002, and while Brush did not see team success in their first season, Jelks landed on the first team all-conference list, and was named honorable mention all-northeast Ohio by the Ohio Golf Coaches Association.
Jelks is an honor roll student, and fills some of her spare time as a basketball referee.
