I always like to get scouting reports from coaches who have coached against players we are interested in. Sometimes it is a whole different view if you have to try and stop a player, than if you are just observing. I talked to James Anderson tonight, the head coach at Narbonne HS and coach of Indi Johnson, and remembered he had to coach against Gearlds and Lawless at the USA Basketball Developmental Festival. What I had forgotten is that Anderson was also Gearlds' Nike coach a couple years ago, so he was well familiar with her. Here is what he had to say...
"Without being redundant I think the best way to size both players up is versatility, two kids who are highly skilled and very diverse in what the bring to the court. Both kids are very cerebral and have a high basketball IQ, both kids have toughness, both cause match-up problems, because they can play with their backs to the basket or take you to the perimeter. Both can put the ball on the floor and finish, Gearlds moreso than Lawless. Both are excellent players."
