According to the Recruiting Beat, 6'10 Brandon Kurtz has narrowed his list to Oklahoma State and Tulsa. Bakersfield (CA) JC head coach Mark Arce has connections to both schools.
Rumors are circulating about Purdue being interested in 6'9 Chicago Leo center Andre Brown. As of last week, Leo head coach Mike Manderino had not seen anyone from the Purdue staff around the Leo gym, nor had any of the coaches talked to the staff up there about Brown. Stay tuned, as Brown is one of the top big men in the Illinois sophomore class.
Another rumor, this time from Canada, has Purdue looking at a junior post player from Ontario. 6'10 Jesse Young from Peterborough Collegiate in Ontario is rated as one of the top players in Canada. In a conversation with Peterborough head coach Dave Goulding, Purdue had not visited, nor had Young visited Purdue unofficially. Goulding said that Young receives close to 30 letters from colleges per week, but so far few have bothered to come to Canada to check him out. One college that has shown a lot of interest is George Mason. Hartford and Notre Dame have also expressed interest. As for Young's talent, he is very mobile with good foot speed and is used as a press breaker by both handling the ball and by positioning as a tall target in the middle of the court. He has an inside/outside game and has a developing perimeter shot. Young averaged 20 points and 14 rebounds last season. Negatives have to be his weight (only 201 pounds) and grades (first SAT was a 750). Coach Goulding thinks Young might be headed to a mid major college. The staff sent tapes to Indiana University, but got no response. And don't look for the kid at the Nike tournament this year, as he will be trying out for the Canadian Junior National team the first weeks of July.
