PURDUE MENS BASKETBALL RECRUITING:
Bobby Smith excels at MCI

Date: 3/24/1998

Hats off to former East Chicago Central star Bobby Smith, who this year played for Maine Central Institute after using up his high school eligibility in Indiana. Smith finished the season at MCI averaging 16.4 points and 8.1 assists per game, and verballed to Villanova last week. More impressive than the good numbers on the court are his good numbers in the classroom. Many schools ignored Smith at East Chicago, pinning the label of "academic casualty" on him. What a difference a year makes. Smith is carrying a "B" average in coursework and just received a qualifying score on the SAT in February of 1010.

The NJCAA will be releasing the list of 1998 Junior College All-Americans after its meeting the first week of April.

Speaking of junior college players, reports are that Bakersfield CC sophomore 6'10 Brandon Kurtz may be looking to officially visit West Lafayette soon. Purdue is being considered for one of his four remaining official visits, as he has already visited Tulsa. Others in consideration for a visit are San Diego State, Long Beach State and Oklahoma State.
