Hats off to former East Chicago Central star Bobby Smith, who this year played for Maine Central Institute after using up his high school eligibility in Indiana. Smith finished the season at MCI averaging 16.4 points and 8.1 assists per game, and verballed to Villanova last week. More impressive than the good numbers on the court are his good numbers in the classroom. Many schools ignored Smith at East Chicago, pinning the label of "academic casualty" on him. What a difference a year makes. Smith is carrying a "B" average in coursework and just received a qualifying score on the SAT in February of 1010.
