Mackey Madness, Purdue's version of the ever popular Midnight Madness, will be held on Friday evening, October 17th at 11:00pm. Gates open at 10:30pm. Although the event will begin at 11:00pm, the scrimmage will not begin until after midnight. Scheduled to be in attendance will be all three 98-99 recruits, and it is possible that Cam Stephens will be able to join the team if the NCAA decision returns in time.
What's wrong with kids these days? When asked recently at a Chicago Alumni Association dinner, Gene Keady put the blame on the lack of two parent families. Keady said that 85% of his kids have a one parent home and need to learn the discipline they aren't getting at home.
It has been rumored that the #1 junior college player in the nation, 6'8 PF Shawn Marion is getting looks from Purdue. I've been watching Indiana's recruitment of him and have never seen Purdue mentioned on any of his lists. Regardless, Marion just narrowed his list two weeks ago to a final five of UNLV, Kentucky, Cincinnati, DePaul and Florida.
Don't be shocked if you hear of Purdue continuing to recruit for the 98-99 class, even though both Stephens and Davis are now comfortably on campus and all other scholarships are full. We've been following a number of senior big men this summer and fall in the event that Purdue would have a scholarship open up for a variety of reasons. Purdue has its eyes on the spring signing period, and will have a good idea by January if Stephens and Davis are going to make it academically. If something happens, the junior colleges will be a likely target for a two year player. Although Greg McQuay is a likely candidate, it is thought by some that he might come regardless of whether there is a scholarship open.
