A recent article in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette analyzed the Big 10 schools and
how many violations they had reported to the NCAA. The paper contacted all the Big10
schools. Iowa, Northwestern and Penn State refused to provide information. Of the 8
universities that did respond, here is the number of violations each reported to the
NCAA...
Total Mens bball only Womens bball only
Minnesota 64 unreported unreported
MSU 44 8 1
Illinois 43 11 2
Indiana 40 5 4
Michigan 32 1 3
Purdue 28 2 19
OSU 24 2 3
Wisconsin 16 1 3
These statistics are for the period between 10/93 and 10/96. 17 of Purdue's violations
were a result of the NCAA investigation of Linn Dunn's program in 1994. Another violation
that affected many Purdue sports was the holding of walkon tryouts before the official
beginning of each sport's season. Purdue argued that the walkon candidates were not
considered "student athletes" at that point and therefore did not have to wait until the
beginning of the sport's season. The NCAA ruled that any prospect becomes a "student
athlete" the second he or she begins such a tryout regardless if they are on scholarship
or not and regardless of whether they are eventually chosen for the team. The Big10
office responded by sending a note to all the universities clarifying the definition. It
is unknown whether any of the other violations at the other Big10 universites were a result
of this case.
