The general concensus among Purdue fans is that after the heavy recruitment of Jamaal Magloire last year, it is nice to have a point guard signed and not be involved in the circus currently unfolding in relation to Bernard Smith, Chauncey Jones and Baron Davis. Jones will not be at Virginia next year. Stories either have him withdrawing his verbal, or the university refusing him admittance because of unsatisfactory core classes. Jones has now moved on to Alabama, and will visit this weekend. Also recruiting Jones is Kansas, who now looks like they are out of Bernard Smith's picture. Bernard Smith reportedly stated on a Houston morning news show he is strongly considering staying close to home. The University of Texas and the University of Houston are now primary choices. That leaves Kansas scrambling for a point guard, and might make a strong move to sign Jones. What happened to Baron Davis? Nothing yet, but he is still likely to go to UCLA. One of his final choices, Georgia Tech, just signed Mount Zion Academy star Travis Spivey. Davis is down to UCLA and Kansas.
Luther Clay may lose his new head coach. Rhode Island's Al Skinner is considered the front runner for the Boston College job. There are also unconfirmed rumors that Francisco Elson has signed with Alabama, the school that originally recruited him out of high school and then arranged for him to be placed in a junior college. If true, and Alabama can also add free-agent Chauncey Jones, they should be headed for a great class. Jermaine Ousley has signed with Memphis and his coach at Tyler JC Fred Rike will also be joining him there as an assistant coach.
The only new news on what looks to be Purdue's last legitimate target Antoine Broxsie is that he might have narrowed his list to all Big10 schools now. Still in the hunt are Purdue, Michigan State and Minnesota.
