PURDUE SPORTS:
Old Gold Free Press Update for 8-13-2002

18 days to Season Opener vs ILL St. at newly renovated Ross-Ade Stadium!!!

Good Morning Boiler Fans! Once again, I'm going to take you straight to the news stories I have compiled since last Friday, led by destewart's WR practice observations from this past Sunday. But first, a couple of football recruiting notes:

    1. WR Jeff Samardzija from Valpo, IN backed out of his visit to Purdue this weekend and announced a verbal for his childhood favorite, Notre Dame, yesterday. It seems to me that new coach Ty Willingham really impressed Jeff and had it been Bob Davie we may be seeing Jeff in Gold and Black. I'd say he would have been a great pick up for us but there are other talented WR's out there and we seem to have a decent table right now (read destewart's report)

Two WR candidates to keep an eye on our 4-star, Bryan Williamson from OH (big WR like Jeff S.) and 3-star, Greg Bracey from WI. Bracey may compare to current frosh Ray Williams with his 4.4 track speed.

    2. OL Nick Fincher from MI could finally be our first OL verbal. Insiders.com lists him as 6-4, 275 lbs with a quick 4.9/40 for a lineman.

    Practice observations for Sunday 8-11-02

    > from Sunday afternoon which saw the boys in full pads for the first time this fall. First, here's the Kickoff Special team first unit as of today: L-R Sean Petty, Eric Smith, John Goldsberry, Brent Hawkins, Pat Schaub, Bobby I, Gilbert Gardner, Jacob Rowe, Marc Huddleston and Daunte Farrell.

I watched the red zone drill which involved a WR and DB going one-on-one from about the 10 yard line. You'll be hearing more about my opinions later, but Al Royal faked Farrell out of his jock for the first TD of the afternoon. Kevin Noel had a score and so did Chase Licklider, the impressive looking walk-on. Ray Williams beat Antwaun Rogers, but then dropped a pass. Same scenario for Drew Rucks against Reeves. John Standeford caught a nice TD and so did Jameel Wilson. Anthony Chambers dropped a TD pass. Royal did not have as much success later as Stu shut him down. The Chris James made a one-handed TD grab against Eric Smith. Noel caught a fade for a TD against Woodard and Colya Daley made a nice move and beat Huddleston. Rogers defended Chattams well. Rucks came back and made a fine grab to beat Smith for a score. Evans caught a fade over Turner and Standeford executed another nice fade route over Petty.

I concentrated on the WR's and here's my thoughts on each:

    # 81 - Al Royal - Al is impressive for a true freshman. He's very physical and not too many CB's are going to bump him off a route. He very soft hands and caught every I saw thrown his way which was catchable. The one drop I recall he was handcuffed by the throw. Catches very well in traffic on the slants and crossing patterns. He doesn't look real fast and is built more like a running back than a WR. I think it's going to be hard to keep this guy off the field if he continues to show what he did today!

    # 80 - Jamaal Wilson - I don't know what helped this young man more, playing junior college ball or spending a season at Wisconsin running routes against the Badger secondary?? He looks good and might even make a run at a starting spot. Has good, but not great speed and always seems to be open. Has very soft hands and makes most of the catches. Looked to be able to keep open deep and knows how to work the sideline.

    # 2 - Ray Williams - Whats not to like. Perhaps the biggest question is whether there's enough talent in the ipperclassmen to afford the luxury of a redshirt. He needs to work on his strength. Has the speed which is not relevation to anyone, but he also has a receiver's hands which makes him potentially a very special player. He just might be our best deep threat since Alford, but I still think he might benefit fro a redshirt year.

    # 23 - Ma and Pa Noel would have been pleased with son Kevin today. He looked like he understood what the game is all about and played with confidence and what an amazing factor confidence can be. Suddenly you look quick again like everyone thought you would be. You get open. You make the tough catches and you don't drop the easy ones anymore. I don't know what the coaches thought, but just maybe Sunday, August 11th will go down as the day Kevin came of age as a big-time receiver. He was beating some of our best Db's in coverage and if he keeps it up there's going to be tremendous pressure to bump one or more starters from last year's WR lineup IMHO!

    # 20 - Andre Chattams - Has a very tough time catching the ball in tight coverage and on the short crossing routes. At more than 200 pounds with good speed I could see Chattams joining fellow Ohioan as our pair of future safeties!!

    # 85 - Jameson Evans - Had some very good moments. Another strong WR who isn't easily bumped and battles to get open. Not a speedster, but can get downfield. He seemed to make most of the deep catches with ease, but struggled with the short routes in traffic. Appears to have good, but not great hands. He's one of those guys who you can see has greatly improved with a redshirt year under his belt.

    # 82 - John Standeford - If he ever gains complete concentration there's no limit to how good he could be. Plays like a junior who's caught more than 100 career passes. Still has the "Bambi" footwork and makes the great catches on the crossing routes and slant patterns. When concentration slips he drops an easy one, but not too often. His additional weight seems to be helping him get open and not be manhandled by the defender. I doubt if his job is threatened.

    # 4 - Anthony Chambers - I see Anthony starting. He is strong and makes the plays. He doesn't jump out at you, but at the end of the day he's doing most of the things you want your WR to do. Has excellent hands and knows how to get open. Can't really tell since they're not going full speed, but I think he's pretty solid running after the catch! I'd say he and Standeford will be tough to keep off the field.

    # 84 - Seth Morales - Had the purple shirt on so didn't participate in the live action. Seth is a "gamer" and will fight tooth and nail to keep his starting spot. If he's beat out it means we've got a very fine football player starting in his place. Whether he's starting or coming off the bench he'll make some key contributions to the team and provide senior leadership.

    # 21 - Taylor Stubblefield - In the purple shirt. Ran some drills and looked fine and displayed good hands. I think the coaches can take their time with his injury because there's some talented depth. The big question mark in my mind is whether he can hold off some bigger, stronger and faster challengers for the starting spot. Let's just say I think the coaches have a nice problem on their hands.

    # 30 - Chase Licklider - There've been Purdue teams which would have jumped at a chance to have a smooth receiver like this young man. He is a "Vacumn Cleaner!" I saw him drop one pass all afternoon and as I recall it wasn't an easy throw. I see Chase redshirting and getting a lot of time in the weight room. If he puts on some weight and can work on his speed I can see him getting some PT in the future. Coach mourouzis at DePauw wanted Chase very badly and I can see why!

    # 83 Mike Rhinehart - Man is he big! I like Mike and he is a pretty much improved player. He makes most catches and battles hard. I don't think he's as fluid a player as Charles Davis and when he runs he rather lumbers which is no criticism as much as an observation.

    # 87 - Charles Davis - All I can say about my 2001 "Pick to Click" is that he hasn't disappointed me. I think this young man has an upside that's as good as almost any player on the team. He has the size, speed and hands to play at the next level IMHO! I would love to be a mouse on the room whenj the coaches discuss Charles. If you want to have your 22 best athletes on the field I don't know how he stays off??

88 - Drew Rucks - Appears to be hot and cold. Looks much biggers than his listed 6-2, 203. From a distance looks like a TE. That having been said he clearly fits the physical WR mold that's been established. I saw him make some nice catches and also some some drops. The big question is whether he's going to stay in the WR mix or be a candidate for a move to another position. A guy his size could add 10 pounds and be a strong safety candidate and with an extra 20 pounds could be in the hunt at LB. He doesn't stickout at WR like most of the guys already talked about, but it's still early.

    # 10 - Colya Daley - Interesting looking player. The first several times I saw him I wasn't impressed. Yesterday I looked at him and suddenly it kicked in! He's a slightly smaller Taylor Stubblefield with better afterburners. He demonstrated a nice set of hands, has excellent moves and appears to have that little extra burst that we all wish TS posssessed. So, he could be a factor much the way Donald Winston and TS have been. AppearS to be too slight to go anyWHERE else so I think he stays at WR.

    # 5 - Chris James - He keeps plugging and continues to make some brilliant plays (great one-handed catch) and then drop an easy reception. If he was a freshman or sophomore you'd say OK he'll work on that and get better. Now he's a senior so you wonder if he's just always going to be one of those guys who teases you with a fine play and then breaks your heart with a drop of a TD pass. The one thing we fans must miss that the coaches must appreciate is that he must do enough things well and have a good attitude or he would not see as much action as he does. They call it the "intangibles" when trying to explain.

One thing I'd bet the ranch on is that we'll see alot more of the 8-man rotation we had two years ago than we saw last year when it got to the point where we sometimes seemed to be stuck on 4 WR's. We have great depth at the position and while you can't help but wish we had that one Rogers-type guy I think it's safe to say that we will be much improved over last year.

In summation I concentrated on the offense and particularly the WR's today. I would say the stars of the day were Kevin Noel and Jamaal Wilson. I now must ponder how I can manage to keep evaluation of the OL at tne bottom of my list!! (vbg) The defense wore their black jerseys with gold pants and helmets and the offense wore their white jerseys with gold pants and gold helmets. Later . . .

    Lowe welcomes challengers

Competition for starting position brings out best in senior running back

By Tom Kubat, Journal and Courier
    http://www.boilerstation.com/football/stories/200208120purdue_football1029128479.shtml

"Montrell Lowe, Purdue's senior running back, is like the gnat that won't go away. As a redshirt freshman, he began his career as a Boilermaker in impressive style, rushing for 841 yards in 1999. He followed that up with 998 yards in 2000, just missing a 1,000-yard season when he injured a shoulder in the Rose Bowl.

His numbers slipped a bit last year, to 640 yards rushing, but that was in part due to an inexperienced offensive line and an offense that struggled all season.

But it's always the same story for Lowe at the beginning of every season -- he's in danger of losing his starting job."

Defensive tackle moves to guard after freshman impresses

By Tom Kubat, Journal and Courier
    http://www.boilerstation.com/football/stories/200208100purdue_football1028956452.shtml

"On the second day of two-a-days, Purdue football coach Joe Tiller did a little tinkering with his lineup, moving redshirt freshman Nick Hardwick from defensive tackle to offensive guard.

"We felt that we needed to get a little more talent in the offensive line, not necessarily from a starting point of view, but just from the numbers standpoint," Tiller said.

Four starters return in the offensive line, but the coaching staff is looking for depth, as it tries to prepare eight Boilermakers for playing time up front this season."

    http://purduesports.ocsn.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/081202aaa.html

"WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - As a reward for his team continued good effort, Purdue head football coach Joe Tiller gave the Boilermakers the afternoon off Monday.

The Boilermakers went through a spirited 1-hour and 20-minute practice session in the morning in shells, capped by some two-minute drill work.

"After our first practice with the entire team (last Thursday), I have been pleased with our effort," Tiller said. "We have been able to get some work done. I expect after giving them this afternoon that we will continue to get maximum effort out of them for the balance of camp."

    Aug. 11, 2002

"WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - And on the sixth day, they put on the pads.

The Purdue football team donned full pads for the first time during two-a-days and featured a full-contact, 30-minute redzone scrimmage.

"I thought for the first day in full pads, it was a little above average," said head coach Joe Tiller. "I thought our effort level was good throughout. Our redzone plays were good and our blitz period went well."

    Football Practice Report No. 5
    Offense heats up with temperature

    http://purduesports.ocsn.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/081002aaa.html
    Aug. 10, 2002

"WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - As the temperature heated up Saturday, so did the Purdue offense.

The Boilermakers again practiced twice in shells - 7:55 to 10:15 a.m. and 4:30 to 6:40 p.m. - and by the afternoon session, temperatures had reached the upper 80s.

Offensively, the Boilermakers had their best showing of training camp in the morning. Quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Kyle Smith both were accurate, running backs Montrell Lowe, Joey Harris, Jerod Void and Brandon Jones all looked good, and the offensive line started coming together."

    Aug. 10, 2002

"WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - For the newcomers to the Purdue football team, Saturday marked one week for them in training camp. Here is what two of the offensive players had to say about their first seven days:

    Brandon Kirsch, QB, Lebanon, Pa.
"I came here with a little knowledge of the offense after spending two weeks up here during the summer, but that was really just the basics. This offense is really complex. I feel that I'm learning and progressing really well for being a freshman."

"Brees was 8-of-13 for 60 yards while playing most of the second quarter.

"I guess it was OK," Brees said of his effort. "We had the one scoring drive, which was nice. Whenever something bad happens, the best thing you can do is put some points on the board."

Brees engineered a 57-yard drive capped by Goodspeed's 1-yard run late in the second quarter before being replaced by Dickenson, who guided the Chargers into position for a 41-yard field goal by Wade Richey, making it 14-10 at halftime."

Tiller hopes new gold look wears on fans

By Tom Kubat, Journal and Courier

"The fans have spoken, and they don't like the Purdue football team's new gold and white look.

Ever since the Aug. 1 unveiling of the new uniforms, to be worn this season, fans have been responding to Internet polls at the Journal and Courier and ESPN

    Tiller says:

"Our thoughts are, not being disrespectful of any tradition, if we lead the way maybe more people will wear gold. And then maybe we can go back to black some day."

"INDIANAPOLIS -- James Hardy is tall, athletic and one of Indiana's top rising juniors.

He lists Purdue among his early college choices, but he has one concern about attending. When will Gene Keady retire?

"I like that they've shown me a lot of love, I like the program and I like the coach," said Hardy, who is entering his junior year at Fort Wayne Elmhurst. "I don't know if he will stay or not. I'm not saying I wouldn't go there because of it, but it's in my mind."
