    Michigan Wolverines, 1/8/06

Michigan has a 6-9 record in the 2005-06 season, but is 0-3 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines beat St. Francis (Pa.), Miami (Ohio), Maine, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Fordham, and St. Bonaventure while losing to Temple, Notre Dame, Toledo, Central Michigan, Washington, Nebraska, Illinois, Michigan State and Iowa.

Head Coach Cheryl Burnett is in her third season at the University of Michigan, sporting a 19-40 overall record, including 7-25 in Big Ten play. Her teams finished eleventh and seventh her first and second years in Ann Arbor, respectively. Burnett, however, is the only Big Ten coach to have participated in two Final Fours, both with Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University). Her record at the Springfield, Mo., school was 319-136 overall, with a 201-65 conference record.

Michigan’s 2005-2006 roster includes 10 players including one junior, four sophomores and five freshmen. The lone junior, Kelly Helvey was lost to a season-ending injury. Six of the players are taller than six foot.

The Wolverines average 62.3 points per game overall, making 39.8% of their field goal attempts, including 32.1% from 3-point range and 73.8% of their free throws. Defensively, the team allows 65.1 points per game, with their opponents making 38.6% of their field goals and 35.4% of 3-pointers. Opponents outrebound the team 39.3-37.7 per outing, while forcing them into almost 21 turnovers a game. In fact, only two Wolverine players – the aforementioned Helvey and Krista Clement – have assist to turnover ratios better than 1:1. The team averages almost 14 assists per game.

In Big Ten play, the Wolverines are next to last in scoring offense (51.7 points per game) and scoring defense (73.7), last in field goal percentage (34.5%), ninth in 3-point field goal percentage (24.1%) and eights in rebounds per game (34.7)

All nine active players on Michigan’s roster average double figures in minutes, led by sophomore guard Janelle Cooper at 27.5 minutes per game. Sophomore Katie Dierdorf leads the Spartans in field goal shooting at 50% and free throw percentage at 86.4%. More than one out of every four Wolverine field goal attempts comes from 3-point range and Cooper is the top shooter, making 41.7% of her attempts. Almost all the Wolverines shoot from the behind the arc; only Dierdorf has yet to attempt a 3-pointer this season.

Sophomore Ta’Shia Walker has led the Wolverines in scoring in eight contests, averaging more than 13.9 points per game. She also paces the squad with 7.1 rebounds per game and shoots 47.1% from the field. She scored 18 points in one game against the Boilermakers last season.

Cooper and freshman Carly Benson follow Walker in points per game (7.6 and 7.1 respectively) while freshman Stephany Skrba comes in second in rebounding with 4.0 per game. Clement (54) and freshman Minnfield (35) lead the squad in assists.

An average of 1,393 fans has watched the Wolverines play in Crisler Arena, compared with more than 4,700 in road games.
