PURDUE WOMENS BASKETBALL:
Opponent #6: University of Notre Dame

Notre Dame has exploded at the start of the 2005-2006 with a 6-0 record, defeating Michigan, Western Michigan, Indiana, USC, Iona and Wisconsin to date. Before the Fighting Irish players begin Big East action, they take on Arkansas State and either North Carolina State or the University of Utah, Valparaiso and Tennessee.

2005-2005 marks Coach Muffet McGraw’s 19th season at Notre Dame and 24th overall. Her career record of 411-155 at Notre Dame includes a victory in the NCAA Championship Game, two Final Fours, 12 NCAA Tournament appearances (the entire total for the program) and 16 consecutive seasons of 20+ victories.

Senior guard Megan Duffy has continued her rise in the Fighting Irish annals, leading the current squad with 18.0 points per game, nearly five assists per game, and more than three steals per game. She’s also tops in free throw percentage (91.2%), minutes per game (38.0) and three-point field goals made (11). The Dayton, Ohio, native is a preseason candidate for both the State Farm Wade Trophy and the Wooden Women’s Award. She was listed on the First-Team All-Big East Conference squad last year.

Another player to watch out for is freshman Lindsay Schrader who tops the squad with a 55.1% field goal percentage. She is second on the squad with 5.8 rebounds per game and 10.5 points per game (the other Irish player other than Duffy to average double figures).

The Fighting Irish are a balanced squad with eight players getting regular minutes, all of them averaging at least 18 minutes per contest. After Duffy and Schrader, the remaining players score anywhere from 4.5 points per game (Crystal Erwin) to 9.2 points per game (Charel Allen). All eight players average at least 3.0 rebounds per game, and the squad outrebounds opponents 39.8 – 36.0.

As a squad Notre Dame makes 45.1% of its field goals, 29.8% of its 3-point attempts and 68.8% of its free throws, scoring 70.7 points per game, while holding opponents to 60.5. The Irish also have a 75-97 A:TO ratio.

Of the 12 players on Notre Dame’s roster, two are seniors (Duffy and Courtney LaVere), two are juniors, four are sophomores and four are freshmen. Four are listed as taller than 6’.
