Ostarello scouting report

Sam Ostarello showed up at the North Tartan/43 Hoops Showcase two weekends ago, and scout Kevin Anderson had this to say about her game ...

"Sam Ostarello, Stanley County, SD 8, 13, 61.5, .308 was all over the court, and in a good way. 10 defensive stops with blocks, steals, and rebounds, very good athlete. Won SD state high jump. Can grab rim. Very energetic. Can score in, out, 3s, and drive. Offensively, problem was teammates weren't ready for the ball even when they were open. Had a tendency to force offense.

Anderson also reported on the first day of the tournament that Ostarello was dunking in warmups.

Multitasking...

Sophomore Courtney Moses scored two of Oak Hill's three goals to help the Golden Eagles advance to the next round of the Marion Sectional. Last week against Maconaquah, in her first season on the soccer team, she scored four goals and had three assists in an 11-0 shutout. Soccer is just the latest sport for the all-around athlete who impressed the Purdue staff at the Purdue Elite Camp this summer. As a freshman, she placed second at the Marion Cross Country Sectional, and second in the Madison-Grant Sectional in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Add to that a growing reputation on the hardwood as a freshman leader last year, averaging 10.3 points and 4.3 assists.

Brittany Rayburn produced a double-double with 27 kills and 16 digs to go with nine blocks, as the Attica Red Ramblers remained perfect in the Wabash River Conference with a 25-20, 25-11, 25-21 volleyball victory.

Sam Ostarello is playing volleyball this year after giving up her career as a wide receiver for the Stanley County football team last fall. Late last week, the Stanley County Lady Buffs volleyball team went down in a tough five-set match to rival Miller. Ostarello led the Lady Buffs going 35-for-39 hitting, with 24 kills, and four blocks.

Chelsea Jones is ranked the No. 1 singles tennis player at Fort Smith Southside, and was recently seeded fourth in the conference at the 7A West Conference Tennis Tournament. She finished the tournament in fourth place. And did you know -- Chelsea finished first in the American Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Mathematics Contest held last February at the University of Arkansas-Fort smith? Her event was Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus.

Big Ten Recruiting

If you clicked the link above on Sam Ostarello, you might have also read about the verbal commitment of Shakila Boler to the University of Minnesota. Boler is not the only recent Minnesota commitment.

Minnesota gained commitments No. 1 and 2 for 2009 is rapid succession in late August. Minnesota received a verbal commitment from a player who will be the tallest player in the history of the Minnesota program. Amber Dvorak, a 6'7 junior post from Hinckley-Finlayson (MN), committed a day before her 16th birthday following an unofficial visit. She averaged 15 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots as a sophomore. Dvorak also carries a 3.95 grade-point average.

Shortly after, Princeton (MN) 6'4 junior post Katie Loberg committed following her unofficial visit. Between Loberg and Dvorak, Loberg is likely the player to have an immediate impact on the Gophers. She averaged 18 points, 12.8 rebounds and 4.1 blocks during her sophomore season. The Tigers went from a 6-19 record in 2005-06 to 14-13 in 2006-07. She chose Minnesota over an offer from Illinois-Chicago, and growing interest from Big Ten programs Iowa, Indiana and Penn State, as well as UCLA, Valparaiso and Boston College. Loberg is ranked No. 44 by Hoopgurlz.

And finally, grabbing the honor of being the first public commitment to a Big Ten program from the class of 2010, 5'10 point guard Shakila Boler chose the North Tartan exposure event to announce her intention to attend Minnesota. Boler was the team MVP for Bloomington Kennedy High as a freshman, averaging 13.6 points.
