The recent commitments of Samantha Woods (Purdue) and Brittany Johnson (Ohio State) makes us realize it has been a while since we have had an update on Big Ten recruiting. So here are some of the commitments around the conference, mostly in order of newest to oldest.

Purdue lands their perimeter/high post target in Samantha Woods of Bolingbrook, Ill. The 6'3 senior guard/forward averaged 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three blocks per game as a junior for the Illinois Class AA girls basketball state champs. Woods is ranked No. 41 by All Star Girls Report and No. 47 by Hoopgurlz. In the Blue Star pre-summer rankings, Woods climbed as high as No. 13. Woods chose Purdue over Michigan State.

Ohio State on Tuesday received a commitment from a player likely to go down in Illinois state basketball history as the state's career scorer. Brittany Johnson of Olney (Ill.), is a 5'11 senior wing who averages 30 points and eight rebounds per game. She is on target to break the career scoring record set by Angie Sapp at 3,403 points before she graduates high school. Johnson also averaged four assists and three steals per game. One of 33 invitees to the USA Basketball FIBA U18 National Team, Johnson was ranked at No. 77 by All Star Girls Report at the beginning of the year and No. 33 by Hoopsgurlz. Johnson chose Ohio State from a final five that also included DePaul, Iowa, Michigan State and Colorado.

Indiana goes to Atlanta to get a commitment from Andrea McGuirt, a 5'9 senior guard from the Marist School (GA). McGuirt is a slasher guard for the 2006 Georgia AAAA state runner-up, and was named to the all-state second team.

Penn State emerges from a recent recruiting sleep to get a commitment from Minnesota senior center Janessa Wolff. Wolff, an outstanding nationally-recruited prospect from the always loaded North Tartan club program, is a 6'3 post player accomplished defensively and offensively. She averaged 24.1 points, 11.6 rebounds and five blocks per game and was named the Minnesota Class 3A Player of the Year as a junior. She’s a career 61.6 percent shooter and carries a 3.8 GPA. Wolff was getting attention from Minnesota, Stanford, New Mexico, Iowa, Iowa State and Kansas State.

While on the subject of North Tartan AAU, the program has recently sent two additional players to the Big Ten Conference. Both to Wisconsin. First came the commitment from 5'7 point guard Alyssa Karel of St. Paul (MN). Karel averaged 14 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting 48-percent from the field, 35-percent from the perimeter and 75-percent from the freethrow line. She is known for crafty passing and overall court speed. Karel actually committed to Wisconsin back in March of this year.

More recently, North Tartan teammate Tara Steinbauer joined her as a Badger commitment. Steinbauer is the scorer from the wing at 6'2, averaging 17 points and seven rebounds as a junior last season for Class 4A state runner-up Kennedy. Steinbauer chose Wisconsin over DePaul, Iowa State, Minnesota, New Mexico and Pepperdine.

Senior 5'9 forward Kachine Alexander, who helped her team to the Iowa Class AAA title last season, has committed to Iowa. Alexander averaged 15 points and eight rebounds a game last season, and was the Class AAA Most Valuable Player of at the state tournament. Alexander also considered Minnesota and Temple.

The Hawkeyes also have reportedly received a commitment from Keisha Walker, a juco sophomore at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. Walker is a 5'8 guard originally from Kansas City. As a juco freshman, she averaged 25.4 points, eight rebounds and six steals per game while garnering all-conference and first team all-region honors.

A player also recruited by Purdue, Boston College, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech chose Michigan State as her future college destination. Taja Wilson, a 6'2 senior center in high school, forward in college, is ranked No. 64 by Hoopsgurlz. Wilson averaged 16.2 points and 10 rebounds per game for Penn Hills, who were 16-9 overall last season.
