Watson, Mosley and Hines gain preseason honors

Three players from the state of Michigan of interest to Purdue have been rated among the top five players in the state. Recent Purdue commitment Lakeshia Mosley is rated Michigan's third best player in any class by the Detroit Free Press. 6'2 senior forward Keshia Hines is rated fifth. Topping the list is versatile junior wing Kellie Watson of Ionia. Below is what the Detroit Free Press had to say about each player, plus a link to the article featuring the top 25 players in Michigan.

    1. Kellie Watson, 6-2, junior, Ionia. Despite being a junior, she is the state's most talented player. She can score off the dribble or take you inside and score on post moves. She has the talent to play guard and the size to dominate in the paint.

    3. LaKeisha Mosley, 6-1, senior, Detroit Community. She averaged 19 points as a junior. She is a strong post player who scores at will inside, can also be a ferocious rebounder and has improved her defense. Committed to Purdue.

    5. Keshia Hines, 6-2, senior, Auburn Hills Avondale. She averaged 15 points, 12 assists [OGFP Note: Typo - this is really her rebounding average, not assists] and four blocks last season. She is an imposing figure in the post, has excellent hands and can catch the tough pass. Look for her to be more aggressive in the post as well as run the floor and finish fast breaks.

    Brittany Johnson off the list

A player the previous Purdue staff showed interest in has narrowed her choices to a final five that does not include Purdue. Brittany Johnson, a 5'11 shooting guard from Olney, Ill., will choose between DePaul, Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State and Colorado. She has already visited the first four programs. Johnson wants a program where she can play immediately, and distance is not an option since her mother plans to move near where she will attend college. Johnson has a shot at breaking the Illinois state career scoring record before she graduates.

    Big Ten Recruiting

Ohio State gets a huge commitment this week from Fenwick's Alison Jackson, a 5'11 senior guard. Jackson was ranked No. 21 by Blue Star and No. 70 by All Star Girls Report, averaging 14.8 points per game as a junior. Jackson chose Ohio State over Iowa, but paid unofficial visits over the past couple of years to nearly all of the Big Ten programs and top midwest schools, including Purdue.

Bolingbrook post player Shantina Boyd has given a verbal commitment to Northwestern. Boyd started on a loaded Bolingbrook team that won the Class AA championship last season. She averaged five points and five rebounds. Boyd chose Northwestern over Air Force, Fordham, West Virginia and Loyola.
