    Mackey visitors watch Minnesota romp

Before the Minnesota game, the Journal and Courier mentioned in a blurb that Purdue was expected to see several prospects visiting unofficially for the game. Thought to be in attendance were Carlee Roethlisberger, a 6-0 junior from Findlay (OH), Ashley Thomas of Loyola Academy (IL), and return visits from Becca Bruszewski and Alex Guyton.

We were able to visually confirm the presence of Carlee Roethlisberger, Alex Guyton and Ashley Thomas, but did not catch sight of Bruszewski. Frequent visitors Ta'Shia Phillips, Dee Dee Jernigan and Brittany Rayburn also made the Minnesota game. In addition, checking out the game were Stephanie Gibson, a junior point guard from Hoover High School in Ohio, Kristen Dockery of South Bend St. Joseph's (IN), and Brittany McCoy of Loyola Academy (IL).

Stephanie Gibson, a junior point guard with a reputation as one of the speediest guards in Ohio, visited with her father. Gibson has been contacted so far by all the MAC schools, as well as drawing interest from Duke, Minnesota and others. As of February 9th, Gibson was averaging 14.9 points and 4.9 assists while shooting .395 from the perimeter and .795 from the line.

The visits of Dockery and McCoy were more to check out Minnesota. McCoy visited with high school teammate Ashley Thomas, and McCoy has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Minnesota next season. Dockery, a 6'4 center on one of Indiana's best high school teams, was sitting in the crowd. The removal of her jacket revealed a Minnesota t-shirt underneath, which was quickly covered by a sweatshirt.

    Stats for Dee Dee

Regular season stats for Dee Dee Jernigan stand at 17.3 points, 4.9 assists, 7.9 rebounds, 2.1 steals per game.

    Big Ten Recruiting

Illinois has landed a commitment from the class of 2007. Bedford (OH) High junior Lydia McCully has given the Fighting Illini an early oral commitment. The 5'9 point guard is averaging 15.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and four steals for the Lake Erie League Erie Division champions. McCully visited both Illinois and Ohio State before making her decision. She plans to major in communications.

Iowa has secured their earliest oral commitment in the program's history. Jaime Printy, a point guard from Linn-Mar of Marion (IA), committed to Lisa Bluder's program as a 15-year-old freshman. Linn-Mar is the alma mater of Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. As a freshman, Printy is averaging 17.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.7 steals while shooting 43.1-percent from the field and 87.6-percent from the freethrow line, leading Iowa's Class 4A in three-pointers made.

    Ramblings

"People have expected a lot of me since I came here. I've just wanted to play basketball. There's really not a lot of pressure. The only thing different this year is I'm being asked to take the ball up all the time." -- East Chicago's Dee Dee Jernigan on her role this year as EC's primary ballhandler.

"With Jernigan running a slow-down offense, forcing teams out of the zone, there isn't a team that can guard her one-on-one, including Division I colleges in the state." -- newspaper staff comment in the Northwest Indiana Times on Dee Dee Jernigan.

"There’s a reason she’s going to Purdue. I knew she was big but she's tall and long and she's probably a better passer than scorer and I don't know if you can say she’s not a good scorer. She’s good at everything." -- Munster coach Beth Vesa said after Dee Dee led EC Central in a Region upset of her No. 1 Mustangs.
