Jernigan and McCurdy complete USA Basketball Festival

Purdue prospects Dee Dee Jernigan and Myia McCurdy have completed their experiences with the USA Basketball Developmental Camp this past week. The two players were two of 36 junior players invited to the camp from the United States this year, along with 12 players from Canada.

Playing for the same festival team, USA Red, the two finished the festival with a 3-2 record and the bronze medal. USA Red took the bronze in the medal game against the Canada 17U team, 74-64.

Dee Dee Jernigan brought her slashing and rebounding game to USA Red, and the statistics from the five games show she played to her strengths. In five games Dee Dee averaged 12.4 minutes (9th on her team) while chipping in 5.4 points (6th on the team) and 5.2 boards (4th on the team). In the bronze medal game, Jernigan led USA Red in rebounding with eight in 11 minutes of play. In terms of scoring productivity, Jernigan was 3rd on her team in points scored per minute of playing time. And while her .429 field goal percentage was second-best on the team (led by Tina Charles at .430), Jernigan was not shooting well from the perimeter (1-of-5) and had a horrible time at the freethrow line (2-of-11).

Myia McCurdy started one game and averaged 13.4 minutes, scoring 5.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. She finished 4th on the team in field goal percentage (.407), but missed both her perimeter shots and hit 3-of-8 from the line. In terms of scoring productivity, McCrudy was 6th on her team in points scored per minute of playing time.

Points and rebounds during the camp were limited on USA Red in part because of Tina Charles setting festival records in scoring (21.0 ppg) and rebounding (13.4 rpg), averaging seven more minutes per game (33.8) than anyone else at the festival, 17.2 minutes above the player average. Charles also set the record for field goals attempted (100) during a USA Basketball festival.

    Big Ten Recruiting

Two more additions to the Big Ten recruiting page.

Indiana adds a 5'10 shooting guard in Kelly McManmon of Lee, Mass. McManmon is a shooter with leadership qualities, who averaged 17 points, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals as a senior. Originally signed with the University of Maine, McManmon sought and received her release to follow former Maine head coach Sharon Versyp to Indiana.

Sireece Bass, a 5'7 point guard from Detroit, Mich., has committed to the University of Michigan where she plans to study education. The National Honor Society member was also a Street and Smith Honorable Mention, averaging 15 points, 11 assists and four steals as a junior and 10 points and 10 assists as a sophomore. Below is a link to our evaluation of Bass (no. 57) at last summer's Nike Camp.
