    2006: Fahkara Malone

Malone sat out the fourth period, but still scored 29 points Wednesday in a 72-28 win over Princeton.

Malone played the role of hero in the first close game of the year for Memorial last Friday. In their first three games, Memorial had beaten their opponents by an average of 35 points. But Memorial had to come back from a 16-point deficit to beat Henderson County (KY), and it took a steal by Malone to seal the 67-65 victory. Malone stripped Kentucky Miss Basketball candidate Ashley Hawkins at the top of the lane, and teammate Whitney Brown ran down for the go ahead layup. Malone led all scorers with 30 points.

    2006: Amber Harris

On Tuesday, North Central began their quest for the Marion County tournament title. Harris scored nine points in the opening round of the Marion County tournament. North Central (5-2) cruised by Lawrence North, 58-38. On Thursday, North Central was bounced by Ben Davis at Ben Davis, 50-41. Harris shared game-high honors with Lacey Workman of Ben Davis, Both ended up with 21 points.

Harris scored 16 as North Central brought in Terre Haute South, only to send them back west with a 74-35 loss.

2006: Jareica Hughes and Timika Williams

Southfield-Lathrup ran all the way to the Class A state semifinals, before dropping a one-point decision to Lansing Waverly, 50-49. Jareica Hughes led all scorers with 21 points, but was unable to get her hands on the ball for the last possession.

Lathrup forced 16 turnovers in the first half and led by five at the break. They quickly extended the lead to eight before Waverly went on a 20-0 scoring binge that left Lathrup without a point for 6:14.

With the score at 45-33, Hughes scored the next eight points and teammate Brittane Russell hit a three to cut the deficit to one. The teams traded points, eventually putting Waverly at the line with seven seconds remaining and Waverly up by one. Waverly's Lauren Aitch missed both freethrows and the ball was rebounding by Timika Williams. Williams passed to forward Briana Whitehead, who couldn't get it to Hughes or Russell with enough time to take a last second shot.

Hughes finished with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor, 1-of-3 from the perimeter and 6-of-8 from the line. She also added four rebounds, four assists, and seven steals. Timika Williams had six points on 3-of-12 field goal shooting, and added 10 boards, an assist and a steal.

    Southfield-Lathrup finished the season 25-2.

    2006: Dee Dee Jernigan

East Chicago posted three more wins since our last update on Jernigan, and stand undefeated at 8-0.

Jernigan had game highs of 22 points and nine rebounds as EC beat Hammond Morton 76-44. EC led 45-17 at the half.

EC Central rolled past Englewood, 85-21. Dee Dee Jernigan scored 12 points. EC led 58-7 at the half.

And most recently, Jernigan scored 26 points as EC Central beat Lew Wallace 92-38. EC raced out to another explosive halftime led of 50-20.

    2006: Myia McCurdy

Winton Woods is undefeated on the season with four victories through their game last Thursday. All four of their opening games have been on the road.

Winton Woods opened with a 52-34 win over Lakota East. McCurdy, in her first game since an off-season knee injury, scored six points.

Game two showed the comeback potential of the team, as Winton Woods erased a 13 point deficit at halftime to win 63-56. Questions of Myia McCurdy's physical condition following her injury this summer were erased in a big way, as she scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Anderson went down to Winton Woods, 54-40, as McCurdy scored 12.

And finally, McCurdy scored 15 points to help Winton Woods beat previously unbeaten Harrison, 66-45.

Through four games, McCurdy is averaging 13.3 points per game, shooting 39.6% from the field and 68.8% from the freethrow line. She has missed all ten of her perimeter shots taken this season. She also averages 11 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals and a blocked shot per game.

    2006: Brittney Moore

Merrillville is off to a 3-2 start, dropping their first two games to Highland and Valpo, then winning three straight against Portage, Chesterton and LaPorte.

Moore had a double-double in a 51-21 win over Chesterton with 10 points and 15 rebounds. She followed it up with 8 points and five boards in their win over LaPorte.

    2006: Joy Cheek

Joy Cheek led all scorers with 23 points in a 74-25 win over Olympic, followed by a 15 point and six rebound performance in a 64-34 win over South Mecklenberg. The wins advanced their record to 5-2, and they currently ride a five game winning streak. The first two losses to open the seaosn were both on the road.

    2006: Kristen Phillips

Out with a stress fracture until January.
