PURDUE WOMENS BASKETBALL RECRUITING:
Nike Interview: 2005 Marshae Dotson

One of the six members of my all-Nike team this year is Columbus Mifflin 2005 forward Marshae Dotson. OGFP had a chance to sit down and talk with Dotson at this year's Nike Camp about her game, her inspirations, and what it takes to be successful with your back to the basket as a 6'0 player.

OGFP: Are you still enjoying your summer?

Dotson: It's great. It can get busy, but you have to respect it. You just have to go out there and play hard. I'm enjoying myself.

OGFP: You are probably further along in the recruiting process than most players.

Dotson: Yeah, a little bit. I'm just trying to get everything together. I'm not quite sure, but...

    OGFP: You are close...

    Dotson: Yeah.

OGFP: So what does a camp like Nike mean to you? We've talked to players who are still in awe about all the coaches watching them. Do you still feel that same kind of pressure to perform, because you look more at ease out there than many of your fellow campers.

Dotson: If I'm terrible or already committed to a school I'm still going to go out and play hard. That's just me. I like being competitive because there are players out here better than me.

OGFP: I just spoke to Erica (Arriaran) and she was impressed and glad to have you on her team.

Dotson: I love Erica. Last game we got a little frustrated, and with her being a point guard, you know, everything is on her. I love Erica and I love how she plays. She lets you know what needs to be done. I played against her at the USA Festival. I didn't make it, but she did. I hope she goes on and plays her game. I like her a lot, and she's pretty cool too.

OGFP: So the pressure is off. Now, official visits?

Dotson: I think I'll take official visits. Maybe all five, or maybe just a couple. I don't think over the phone or talking on the phone you get the feel of how that college will be if you stay there four years. I think visiting will answer that question.

OGFP: Have you visited, unofficially, any programs yet?

Dotson: Purdue. I visited for a game and I really liked it. Everyone is like a family. The place is really cool.

OGFP: What kind of major are you looking for?

    Dotson: Communications or psychology.

    OGFP: Sports psychology?

Dotson: Yeah, maybe get into coaching.

OGFP: Let's talk about you relationship with Jannon Roland, because I know you two have known each other for a while.

Dotson: Jannon's great, I love her. She pushes you, and she's just fun to be around -- we clown together. She's just a great person to be around. She pushes you when it's gametime. In classes too, if she was there I'm sure she'd help out too. She's a good one.

OGFP: Who gets on you the most right now? Who is your biggest critic, other than...

    Dotson: ...myself?

    OGFP: ...other than yourself.

Dotson (laughing): I was going to say myself. I'd have to say my biggest critic would have to be my high school coach. Or my AAU coach. Actually, it's all of them, plus my family. They are like 'why are you trotting down the floor?' They help me out a lot. It's hard. It's very hard for me to talk about myself, especially in basketball. I know I need to work on some things, and until I work on those things I can't talk about them.

OGFP: You know I'm going to make you talk about them. What is your biggest negative in you game right now? Something you are struggling with. You're very versatile, and even though you aren't as tall as a lot of the post players here, you are playing very well against them.

Dotson: Moving my feet. I need to move my feet more, and maybe dribble a little more. It's like I can, but I don't. And shoot more. That's not all, but the major things I'm working on right now.

OGFP: What do you see yourself playing in college?

Dotson: A three or a four. If I'm playing a guard, I'll take them inside. It all depends. I have to be comfortable in the position, then I'll be fine. I'll work hard and things will just come.

OGFP: Who has been your toughest matchup here at Nike?

Dotson: Actually (Ashlee) Trebilcock. We played them yesterday. She was so smart. When I'd give her some space she'd fire it every time. We did end up beating them, but I had to step it up. I knew what to do but I was slow. I just got a little quicker and it worked out.

OGFP: Do you try to search out other players here that are looking at the same schools you are considering?

Dotson: Yeah, but they are sometimes too biased.

OGFP: How to you prepare to play games in this type of setting?

Dotson: I just sit there and think about what I need to do. Not just for myself, but for my team too. I just sit there in a daze and think. Then I look at the other team and try to think what they need to do against us. It's things like that that get me ready.
