PURDUE MENS BASKETBALL RECRUITING:

    Zeller visiting Illinois

Luke Zeller was on the Illinois campus for an official visit Sunday and today, his first since reducing his list to his final five schools -- Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Notre Dame and Stanford.

Although eliminated by Zeller, Matt Painter's arrival at Purdue may give Purdue a second wind, according to the Lincoln Courier on Sunday. Zeller is a top priority of Purdue, and even more now that Painter has begun recruiting for his alma mater.

Around the Big Ten: Illinois gets Brock

Illinois has filled its final scholarship for the Class of 2004 by signing Chicago Simeon High School forward Calvin Brock. Brock, a 6'6 forward who averaged 24.3 points per game as a senior, chose the Illini over DePaul. Brock was named the Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year, and carries a 3.4 grade-point average.

Filling their last scholarship available for the CLass of 2004, Illinois will have two scholarships remaining to offer the Class of 2005. Weber is expected to sign a center and a point guard.

    NCAA considering restricting recruiting visits

The NCAA is reviewing the rules and regulations regarding official visits, and has recommended five major changes while reject five additional changes. The changes will go in front of the NCAA Division I Management Council on Tuesday, then on to the Board of Directors on April 29. Both those groups will review the changes, provide their own recommendations, then circulate the issues out to the 31 conferences for their review. On July 19, the NCAA Division I Management Council will meet again to determine what changes, if any, should be sent back to the Board of Directors in August.

Among the changes favored for passage...

    * Prohibiting special lodging for recruits in hotel suites with perks such as hot tubs in the room.
    * Prohibiting the use of special vehicles to transport recruits on campus, including those with televisions or special decorations.
    * Banning meals that are not comparable to what current student-athletes are served.
    * That each school have a written policy on alcohol and entertainment during recruiting visits, and that the official student host of a recruit sign a form pledging not to engage in the relatively ambiguous phrase "inappropriate conduct."
    * Banning personalized materials including a jersey with a recruit's name on it and video scoreboard presentations.
