PURDUE MENS BASKETBALL RECRUITING:
Maurice Shaw to Purdue? Maybe not.

Maine prep center unsure after Keady's final year announced.

As news broke here at Old Gold Free Press on Saturday regarding the commitment of 6'9 center Maurice Shaw of Bridgton Academy, verification became problematic. Actually, downright strange.

Had "Big Mo" actually committed to Purdue, or not? Sources close to the situation said yes he had, but in the same breath claimed Shaw was talking to other schools.

What we could confirm was an oral commitment was made by Shaw to Purdue, but he did not sign a letter-of-intent this past week once the spring signing period kicked off on April 14th.

Then, in a conversation with Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter Kevin Gorman, Shaw indicated he had second thoughts when Matt Painter was hired to replace Gene Keady, and not Cuonzo Martin, who had recruited him at Bridgton. He is now considering Georgia, DePaul, Baylor and Miami, along with Purdue.

If Shaw honors his previous commitment and ends up signing with Purdue, he would give Purdue a four-year post player that would carry Purdue beyond the 2005-06 season where every Purdue player over 6'7 will graduate.

If Shaw does not honor that oral commitment, then it will be imperative Purdue land at least one quality post player in the class of 2005. Maybe two.
