PURDUE MENS BASKETBALL RECRUITING:
Recruiting Update: Vaden opens season

    Scouting Report: Robert Vaden

Robert Vaden led No. 1 Pike in their season opener with 14 points.

"DG10" had this scouting report from Saturday's game...

He was as impressive as one can be in only scoring 14 points....the score was actually not indicative of how close the game was, as FC really slowed the game down and remained very close throughout. Pike had a quick 8-0 run late in the 4th quarter. Pike is indeed loaded, and there is no team in the State of Indiana that should have a prayer of a chance of beating them...but they do not play as a team and that could come back to haunt them. It will be extremely tough for someone to beat them by trying to run up and down the court with them, but if someone can dictate tempo and shoot the ball well, they would have a chance. Pike's zone defense was terrible, and their offense against the zone was poor as well. They simply won the game because of the vast amount of talent that they have, and that will be the case a number of other times this season I am sure. I believe Robert missed two shots from the field was all, and he had a couple of very nice assists to go along with a truly phenomeal 4th quarter dunk from the baseline.

    Scouting Report: Josh McRoberts

Josh McRoberts scored 13 points on 4-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line as Carmel won their first game of the season, 46-31 over Lebanon.

"S" had this scouting report from Saturday's game...

"Let me preface by saying he is only a sophomore, but a very talented one at that.

The thing I noticed most in warm-ups is that he is a better than average athlete at his size. Most 6'9" kids at that age are lumbering or awkward. That is not the case here.

Needs meat on his bones, but isn't an Ethiopian.

Excellent, and I mean excellent passer. The box score in the Star only gave him credit for 1 assist, I remember at least 3 or 4 off hand plus a number of "last passes." FYI, last pass is a stat recorded for when a guy takes a shot, not just makes one. To me personally, this is a better sign of a player's distribution than assist, but what player wouldn't want better stats...vbg.

The only real knock on him is that he relies on his size defensively too much. Now remember, he's only 15 so I have to cut him some slack. He seemed to fade in and out with hustle because he could just stand there against a much shorter Lebanon team and cover the lane. He didn't block out, either as most HS guys that size don't.

Did I mention he was a great passer?

Offensively he needs to work on the mechanics of his shot a little bit. He has a "hitch" in his motion that throws him off when he's wide open. If anyone ever shot on "low goals", it's the constant clutch you did when you would pretend you were a 7 footer and trying to be smoooooooth. There were several times where he would catch and without hesitation make a pass to an open guy. To me, this says he has good court awareness and is paying attention to his teammates. I'd say he's unselfish too much. That's OK, because as he gains confidence he'll ease into that scorer's mentality.

Carmel has a pretty good squad, but no guards. The Swoopes kid is a hell of an athlete, and he impressed me the most. Carmel has another 6'8" junior with a nice outside shot (hit a couple of 3's), but he's a beanpole. He'll get a scholie somewhere though because of his heighth. If Swoopes develops better ballhandling skills, he could wind up at a lower D-1 school.

McRoberts will be a stud. He's got the foundation.

    Scoreboard

Adam Liddell was shooting for the quadruple-double, but came up a little short. In a 53-42 win over Wawasee, Adam hit for 17 points, eight rebounds, eight blocks and seven assists.

Sophomore Dominic James caught the last second offensive rebound but was unable to convert as Richmond (1-3) fell to Anderson Highland, 53-52. James scored 14 points on 7-of-16 shooting.

Sophomore center Luke Zeller led Washington (3-0) with 23 points over North Daviess, 52-41.

Junior point guard A.J. Ratliff scored 14 points, hitting 4-of-7 shots from the perimeter, as No. 2 North Central (2-0) remained unbeaten with a 79-59 win over Lawrence Central.

Junior Jon Pierce blocked what would have been the winning shot and led Seymour (1-2) with 16 points in a 60-59 victory over Bloomington South.
