Some teams with local roots did very well in national competition this summer. The 14-under Attica (Indiana) Steelers finished 5th at the National Invitational Championships in Cocoa Beach, Florida. All but two of the players on the team are from Attica. Attica boasted an undefeated regular season in junior high play, and the same team was undefeated in elementary school. The team finished 7-1 in the national tournament, and 31-6 for the season.

In other 14-under action, Municipal Gardens of Indianapolis took the title at the AAU nationals at Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Municipal Gardens defeated Southern California All-Stars 66-65 for the title. The Indiana team was led by Chris Thomas with 26 points. Chris Thomas is an incoming freshman at Pike high school, and will be taught the high school game by the father of former Boilermaker guard Linc Darner. Alan Darner also has two other highly regarded players on his 97-98 Pike squad in Boiler recruit Rodney Smith, and high scoring returning starter Isaac Kincaid. Chris Thomas attended Gene Keady's basketball camp this past summer. A player to keep an eye on...

Members of the team that ran off with the 1997 Spiece Run N' Slam tournament title finished third in the National AAU's 17-under basketball title in Orlando, Florida. The Chicago Warriors, coached by Larry Butler, were led by three Chicago Young players, Quentin Richardson, Cordell Henry, and Dennis Gates.
